I know this has probably been asked a million times. I need a new modem and I want the best. I am currently using a Diamond Supramax. I am not dissatisfied with it but I know it is a soft modem and know I can do better. I do alot of gaming and general internet surfing. I could care less about frills and bonus software. Any reccommendations?

Go with any 3Com(formerly US Robotics) hardware modem. These are "industry standard". Also do a search on this forum for similar threads.

I like the 3COM USR v.90 external. It comes in a few different versions, but the "Internet Gaming" version is supposed to be the best. It features better ping time response and faster speed rate transistions. I like externals, since I don't have to worry about support in my other Non-Win operating system's like Linux, FreeBSD, and O/S-2 Warp.

If you would like to see tons of reviews, Sysopt.com has is own user review section. Might want to give it a try:

Good Luck,

Speaking of 3Com, anyone else here heard how they're dropping (among other things) their complete line of modem products? Can't remember what company will be picking them up...

I've had a USR (now 3com) Sportster 33.6 (external) which I now use as a dial-in server (PPP + PAP). It works great, great connects, everything is dandy! I have had this modem for a few years now and I can't say enough good things about this hardware http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Any Thing USR/3com thats non-win is pretty much better than any other modem out there (other than high speed lines)

If you can afford it go with the Courier v.90, Their more expensive but the best.

I've been use'n a v.34 version for the past 5 years with NO problems.. well ok my phone line was shut off once but other than that.

I got one of the 1st Sportster 56k's that was X2 flashed to v90, I've had few problems with it.

Stay away from anything under $60 (or so). You get what you pay for.

External! -by far.

I highly recommend the Modem Blaster Flash 56 by Creative Labs, I picked up one of these for $79 - It was my first external modem and it is quite simply the best modem ever.
