Just bought the new ASUS A7V motherboard and Duron 600.

Whole system consists :-
128 MB PC100 RAM
8.4 GB Maxtor Diamondmax DMA33 HD
20 GB Fujitsu Picobird DMA66 HD
Diamond Supra PCI modem
Hauppauge TV Decoder card
and
Sonic Impact S90 sound card ( this i think is where the problem lies)

When the sound card is inserted the system randomly locks.
Without the sound card works ok
Picobird drive was connected to the ATA100 Primary... but have moved it to the DMA66 slot and no difference

Instance of a lock up is trying the demo mode on 3D2000 by Madonion... obviously having to access the sound card is locking it.

Initial installation showed a conflict with the soundblaster emulation and the ATA100 Promise controller???
Disabled the soundblaster emulation to no avail.

This motherboard is Rev 1.02 and has NO built in sound. Have an old ISA sound card but obviously no slot to put it in....arghhhh

Tried disabling the SCSI Promise controller in bios.... no joy.

I'M running out of ideas.

Nothing is overclocked.. and Bios is basic settings....
Motherboard and CPU temperatures well below any danger level.

Before sledgehammer comes out can someone please give me a suggestion.

Many thanks

it can be a IRQ conflit with ur soundcard, take note of what PCI slot u put the card in (the number) and try in the bios setup util to change the IRQ for it. You will see that option in a sub menu called PCI configuration or something close http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Also, read well ur A7V manual, it has more info about how the board manages IRQs.

I had a conflit with my NIC and my Geforce and i solve it using the BIOS.

I truky think this board rules, the only thing is that this board has so many features that it would be impossible to make it simple. I just hate one thing, the PROMISE drivers, i'm sure they speed my system a lot (yes, really) but the windows boot has a pause of maybe 10 seconds when those drivers are used. I dunno why this happen but what the hell, they give us more speed after that...eheheh...Promise tells in their site they have prove that their udma controller gives more 40% of performance to every drive!!!! Just by using their drivers. I wonder if this is true but they are fast for sure. My Duron 650 has much more performance than the P3 650E i had, why? i'm sure it's not cause of the cpu change but of the mobo change (i had a be-6) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Thanks for the reply Mugu3l

Tried every slot and every IRQ.

Feel like I'm going insane......arggggghhhhh

Yes I have a 10 second wait before windows..... very frustrating..

This board has as mentioned NO built in sound card BUT the BIOS has the option to enable or disable the sound and modem?????
Is this a throughback from the other board with the sound???

If so... should this be enabled or diabled???? have tried both.,, still no joy http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
Dont see any point buying a new sound card as I'm sure i'll get the same probs..

COuld anyone please give me a complete list of they're BIOS settings that work before they cart me off..... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Given up for the day...

Thanks again

the bios for both versions of a7v is the same, that's the reason for having that option in ur bios, did u tried to change the pci slot? try to put it in the 3, 4 or 5th slot, i've seen conflits in both 1 and 2. Hope that helps.

Did you load the VIA 4-in-1 drivers? They include an IRQ miniport driver, which could resolve many of your configuration problems.

VIA recently updated their 4in1 driver. maybe that will help. p.s. my asus a7v just came about 4hours ago. should have it assembled by the weekend.
i don't know anything about your sound card, but did you check for a driver update? also, you may want to take out your modem, and decoder card, boot up and see if it still happens ?
Oh yea, when you took out legacy support did you check the autoexec.bat for any lines relating to SB compatiblity? sometimes just disabling it in device manager doesn't work, and you need to uninstall the driver and reinstall without legacy mode(if possible)
I will be watching to see what happens, and when i get mine up will gladly send you bios settings, only thing i will use different sound card, video and no tv tuner card.
P.S. again. i have heard of the boot lag issue so you are not alone. i am hoping a bios flash will fix it in the future

Thank you guys for the suggestions.

The Diamond Sonic Impact S90 sound card is virtually identical to the original Montego Beach card.

They both use the original A3D Vortex chip.

Have flashed the motherboard bios to ver 1.004.

Loaded new 4in1 drivers including miniport.

Windows is now showing no conflicts ... ahhh progress at last http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Removed the legacy SB line from Autoexec.bat and disabled SB emulation.

Card is presently in slot 4.And IRQ on 9.

Alas still got lock ups..... appears to be when using the vortex chip??? Can play wav files ok???

Can you guys please tell me what sound cards you have??

Think to board is brill except for this problem.....Last time i saw that many jumpers I was out shopping... lol
Choose this board because of the reviews..

Yes hooking up the DMA66 drive to the ATA100 promise socket has increased the benchmark by about 30%, and that was before defragging.

Feel I'm going to EVENTUALLY love this board but NOT if it can't speak to me http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

By the way forgot to mention.... video card is Voodoo3 but can't see that causing any probs.

Unfortunately the Duron 600 CPU is clock locked.....bummer. Not that bothered the now as I was upgrading from a K6-2 350 (served me well) so the performance leap is almost 3 fold.
Have read tomshardware.com on rejoining the L1 contacts.....errrrrrr as a non microelectronics person but willing to give things ago I couldn't believe how small this contact really is.????
Seems like you need a tunnelling electron microscope to see them let alone rejoin them....lol

Heard AMD used a CO2 laser to cut the contacts so just goes to show what degree of accuracy is needed...... would love to actually hear of someone accomplishing this... Have no idea where I could get a conductive pen.

Thanks again.

In Scotland by the way..... seems most people on here are from USA/Canada.....please help.... good for Anglo/USA/Canada relations.....hehe... ;-)

I have had several problems with Aureal sound cards when used with vendors drivers and VIA chipsets. I found that using the latest Aureal reference drivers commonly takes care of the issues. Here's a link:

Thank you very much RobRich

Downloaded the new Vortex drivers but showing conflicts which I'm almost 100% sure it the cause of the lock ups.
This is the same conflict as that with the Diamond drivers.

Conflict is in : -

Sound,video and game controllers :-

Gameport Joystick
Vortex Gameport Interface

It is the Vortex Gameport interface showing up the conflict because it can't find a free I/O resource.

This is because the 'Gameport Joystick' has grabbed the I/O first.

Cant stop this default 'Game Joystick loading first...arggghhhhh

There isn't a joystick connected.

I feel if I can get rid of this conflict everything will be fine.
Disabling the Vortex Gameport Interface in this hardware profile resulted in the the demos that hung ..running but without sound??? Is this more progress???

Please someone help me sort this out.. it driving me nuts!!!!
Can't be that much wrong..

Why is this Gameport Joystick being detected????

Many thanks

T

Just pulled the sound card noticed that windows is still showing a Gameport Joystick??????

Does the BIOS think there is a built in game port???

If so how do i tell it there isn't..?

There is physically NO game port..... what is this computer doing....??

Sick of it for the day again...!!!

Looking at this I would assume a similar conflict even with a new sound card.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

I've had that happen before with the Asus A7V. It's more of an annoyance than a problem. Simply disable the game port controller/joystick in your hardware profile, then the Votex's game port controller will work fine, and the conflict will disappear. You will still have an extra game port with a red "X" in device manger, but just ignore it.
