I recently formatted my hard drive (used to have 98 1st ED) and installed 98SE, since then every time I connect to the internet, my ping times are slower and my download speeds are slower. Also if I double click on the "two computers" in the systray, the stats ALWAYS show that I have sent more data than I have received.

Please help me out, as I am pulling my hair out. Unrealtournament is too slooooooooooow with this problem.

I don't really want to format again and re-installl 98 (1st Ed).

Cheers,
Lee.

have you checked your comport speed? maybe it is set to something really slow. Should be set to at least the speed of your modem...

Nope, I checked all the settings, the port speed is set to 115,200bps, next step below is 57,600bps.

Errr, I've checked everything else, and can't think of anything else other than reformatting and going back to Win98 1st Ed :-( Which I do NOT want to do, too time consuming.

Please help me out,

Lee.

have you checked for updated drivers for your modem ? and or updates from microsoft ?
also try running system file checker see if you have a corrupetd file ?

or you could also try uninstalling all the network and internet stuff, defrag your hard drive and then reinstall it all

no that is not right sounds like something is sending all the time run system moniter
add dial up adapter bytes sent/s and bytes recieved/s also, and see whats happening

what programs are running in the back ground ? realyplayer, ICQ, anything like that ?

download zonealarm www.zonelabs.com (http://www.zonelabs.com) and see what all is connecting when you dial in

it could be anything doing it

Definitely make sure you've checked for the right/latest drivers, esp. if you have a WinModem from 3com or Lucent (LT)... I've experiences similar problems with both of their modems when I didn't have the EXACT right drivers. You'll need ALL the little numbers on the stickers on the modem, esp. for 3com. And about two hours to actually dig the right driver out of their website...

Yeah, I have gone through what programs could be sending data, and I have closed all down except the bare minimum, using Ctrl-
Alt-Del etc.

I have also tried Zone Alarm, see my other current thread! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Which picks up very little incoming traffic, but also only lets my selected programs access outwards etc.

It is just very bizarre as I haven't seen this before.

The only thing I havn't done, is update the modem drivers, which were installed from the original modem CD. It is a Diamond Supra Express Internal, so I might take a look at the drivers, but as usual a reformat is looking likely and ANOTHER isntall of Windows, although this time I will go back to the Better Win98 1st Edition (IMHO).

The only reason I went to Win98SE was to see if it had any advantages, which from what I have seen, ZERO http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Oh well, if any of you have any other suggestions, I would be pleased to hear them before I wipe the disk.

Cheers,

Lee.

I have tried all the "usual" stuff, the main thing is that fact that the connection is SENDING more than it is receiving!!! which seems to more than a little strange, doesn't it??

I thought that windows was getting confused and was swapping the sent and received round the wrong way, bu that still doesn't account for the slowness, or the slow pings, or the low download rates of 1Kb/s, isntead of 3 or 4 Kb/s with Win98 !st Ed.

You could see if spyware is sending out information..

https://grc.com/optout.htm

Another way to monitor what's going out is ComSpy 98.

I should have menioned that I have already run Opt Out, in fact it runs each time I start the PC at the moment.

I will try comspy if you think it may help,

Cheers Socalgal,

I just thought I'd let you all know that:-
Even with the latest drivers for the modem it....made no difference.

So I bit the bullet so to speak and formatted the drive again

And installed Win98 1st Edition again, and thankfully everything is back to normal again.

Cheers for the advice though, and I will still try that compspy, as it may be interesting.
