I got me a M598 V9.0 MB, AMDK62 350mHz CPU, and 2, 64M DIMMs. Try as I might, I'm unable to get W2k to install with this mother(board). Initially had W98SE running, tried the dual-boot on a WD 20.5G HD partitioned into one primary & four logical (c: thru F http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. With W98 on c: attempted W2K on D: -
Nope. Tried install with one DIMM at a time installed. Nope. Pulled modem, zip drive and 2nd CDROM (leaving the HP cd burner) out of the equation (reset jumpers etc...). Nope.
Instead of clean install, tried to replace W98 with W2k. Nope. Reformatted C: drive and tried clean install. Nope. Pulled out a few hairs. Nope. Flashed the BIOS with the help of this excellent board. Flashing worked like a charm. Confidently tried W2k. Nope. Nope. Nope.
I see from PC's deliciously rat-in-a-maze-like web page that there is no video driver listed for the M598 - only the M598LMR. Is that the one to try? Is this 'interesting' piece of MB technology ever going to work with W2K?
I have nothing against being bald per se, but would like it to happen when trying to learn W2K, not while trying to install it.
Any help appreciated more than you know http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Please give us some actual details on WHAT is happening when you try to install Win2K. IE: does it error out prior to loading the OS?
Does it crash? If so at what point? How far into the install do you get? Details http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif We need details http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

...sorry, I was detailed-out, had to vent http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

On my installation the following:
1) During the initial decompression off cd of files to winnt folder the msg: ...'was not copied correctly...the file setup placed on your harddrive is not a valid w2k system image', was displayed for several files (mfc40u.dll, ntkrnlpa / ntoskrnl.exe etc...). Choice given to retry, skip or quit. I re-tried - in some cases several times - until install proceeded.

2) Booted back into win98 and manually overwrote those files from cd (cab files, compressed files etc...) to the winnt directory.

3) Rebooted and proceeded w/o incident thru networking component install.

4) Upon copying files / components phase, msg: 'setup cannot copy the file kodakimg.ex_' popped up. Window to browse to file location appeared and even tho file showed there, it would not copy. In one instance got a, 'directory name invalid (err #267) message.

5) Skipped such files (dozens, like .wav files, dialer.exe) and continued to plod on thru setup.

6) Finally, it was more than old Betsy could take, and I got the by now familiar '...0x00000050 / page fault in non paged area' stop screen. Something about datestamp and ntoskrnl also.

PCChips, in response to an email, sent a cryptic, one-sentence reply and a zip file with the following: cmpci.cat, cmpci.sys and cm8738.inf. How and where should this be installed? Right clicking the inf file and selecting 'install' appears to do nothing.

Thanks...

The latest attempt stops with page fault at the component installation phase during the 'installing / configuring COM+'

Still did not like the image it was seeing from the temp directory to the winnt folder eary-on tho...

Here's another possible clue: at the advice of PurePerformance web page, I'd set my MIN & MAX Virtual Mem setting at 128M (to match my on board RAM). Could this affect the installation? Haven't had a chance to test the theory yet. Also, I have the BISO settings at the optimal (default), with anti-virus disabled. Are their other settings I should be altering / checking?

Had memory bench-tested & its a-ok. Virtual mem settings had no effect. Installed video & sound drivers from PCChips required for W2K: same problem. Tries drivers for W2K from SiS (vid chip manfacturer): no change...
