The IBM's,HP's,Dell's etc can use them(including cnr's slots) to offer a lower final price, at least thats the theory. If you're building your own look for a board with many pci(or isa if you have legacy parts), they are far more flexible-you are not limited to audio or modem.

how does amr differ from the pci versions of modem or audio, is there a performance difference?
Is abit's kt7-raid controller equivalent to asus a7v ata 100 controller and is there any advantage in having an isa slot nowadays?
