For the heck of it I ran Mcafees PC system check thing.It kept saying that my memory was having errors and failed it in the test. How reliable is a software program in checking that. It is Viking pc100 128MB on an Abit Be6-2 board.
or is it possible the memory IS bad?

Also if you think the memory is bad who do you recommend for memory? crucial? viking? pny? etc.....

try running a different diagnostic program, like Sisoft Sandra from
