yesterday i received an asus p5a-b w/a k6-3 400 i won on an auction yesterday to replace my FIC VA-503+/k6-2 400. i wanted to throw the new chip in the old board first so as to compare the performance difference between mobos. this required a BIOS upgrade.
THE BAD NEWS: i've flashed my BIOS twice before, no problem. flashed it again and everything appeared OK, until i rebooted. 2 short tones and a long fog-horn beep, then *tick* my display light went from green to orange. warm boot, nothing. cold boot, nothing. dead, dead, dead. %@*#!!!
THE GOOD NEWS: my plan after testing the new chip w/the old board was to format and rebuild windows w/the new board. didn't think to check the BIOS to see if it would boot to the a: drive - it didn't. amazingly enough i booted to 98SE w/o a hitch. plug and play actually worked on a motherboard. *phew* (heard some horrow stories before).
according to the help file 2 short beeps and 1 long indicate a video problem. i'm running an AGP card so if i can track down my old PCI card i'll try it first. if that doesn't work a buddy of mine has an ISA. if THAT fails you guys'll be hearing from me. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif
wish me luck.
