Well, Dell and Gateway are proprietary but they do have some flexibility in design. I've upgraded my Dell system easily.
OTOH, HP and Compaq are prob the worst. Tiny cases, absolutely non-standard motherboards (USB and Parallel ports in front), sometimes the screws aren't even phillips or flat head!!
HP's computers are some of the worst products they sell. But their calculators, printers, and scanners I've found are some of the best there are.

Hey you guys,
I know these little buckets of bolts, since I work at Tatung and we produce these little thingies.
Let me guess, To open it you have to screw the 3 screws of, which hold the sidepanel.
Which BTW is one piece in total, am I still right??
To get to the mobo, you would have to screw 2 of the back and 2 off the side, still right??
The mobo folds sideways right???
If I'm still right these things are called piglets or ????, the other name I forgot.
Does it have a different color front then the rest of the case???
Either the model is a 44xx, 45xx, 65xx or a 66xx, am I right???
If you have questions about it, drop me a line.
Pim.

I responded to your post in Tech with a link for drivers, zzzreyes.
This is why it's not a good idea to post in multiple forums.

zzzzreyes, Please - you know better... It's not cool to do this knowingly and you know why... and your topic is well seen in either General or Technical.
Please don't MP again. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

**double posted, posted in technical support as well.***
**sorry socalgirl, but I want to make sure everyone reads this and considers it, before buying an HP product, or a brand name as such for that matter**
My friend brought his mighty HP system for me to fix it a bit. he wanted a burner in what seems to be be a miniature of a mini case, and wanted an upgrade on the OS.
Man what a Mistake......
I got my self in a nasty mess... their is an extra bay for the burner to fit, but the face plate covers it. He said he didn't mind if he lost the face plate, when I open the computer.... Surpize!!! the thing is sealed off!
anyhow, decided on removing the regular cd rom and put the burner only instead... This is a mission impossible, since to get to the cd rom, I have to remove the board and take the case apart!
Man! Frustrating.
To further add to the problems, the comp uses an intel 810 chipset, and I figure it would be easy enough to find drivers.
I got the video to work again, but I can't get the integrated sound to work!
I can't even find the brand name of the board.
I think that I manage to get the modem working again, but I tell you, it has been frustrating....
If anyone knows anything about where to get drivers for a pavillon 6630 please hook me up!

They will all be on his restore and HP drivers cd's. HP produces a propriatary case and motherboard setup just like Compaq, Dell and Gateway. Those systems truthfully are made to used as for the most part and then traded off/trashed when newer faster better machines are needed. I am betting that the "extra" bay is not truly sealed off but that there is a coverplate that will have to be removed to gain access to it.
For the reasons that you are stating that you hate HP is the main reason that "white box" builders everywhere are in business http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Run the recovery, identify the driver you need, copy that to a FDD or ZIP, run an upgrade, and update the generic driver with the HP driver, then stop *****in'
These boxes are made mostle for the first time user, who has little or no knowledge, and work great in that market. !

Beor999:
easier said than done buddy...
what recovery are you talking about?
I don't have the recovery cd, or otherwise it would be so easy, that even you wouldn't have problems doing it!
I don't mean to be a smartass or anything, but who's fault is it when you don't have the recovery CD that the company provides to fix problems just like the one your having now. My first puter was a Pavilion 6356 and was a good one at that. Besides the fact that it did have an itty bitty, teeny weeny case, which you can see perfectly before you buy the thing, it served me(and still does as a second computer)well. I've added a burner, more memory(which isn't proprietary as some think), a second hard drive, a Voodoo 3 2000 pci, network card, and a soundblaster and not once(knock on wood) did I ever have any problem...with anything. They, well, I'll say mine, really are pretty good pre-maid machines. If were going to buy another cookie cutter or recomend one, I'd have no problems with going with HP. Just my thoughts. Oh, btw, I've still got my recovery disk, lmk if can help you. Casey
I work on almost nothing but HP PC's at work. I can tell you that HP has drivers available for any PC they manufacture right on their website, as well as on the recovery CD and the Diag cd that ships with the PC's.
What is the HP model number on the label? I will get a link to the drivers for you.
Oh....and don't MP anymore...or you'll get a lot of p'd off post's.

If u can find the drive without a problem, I will feel super incompetent!Oh well, to tell u the truth, it wouldn't surprise me if u find them!
I've looked tough!
anyhow the model of the comp is
HP pavillon 6630
and I need the sound drivers.
Yes, I know its my fault for l0osing the cd.
but when u have over 1000 kicking around 24hrs its hard 2 keep track of them.
Either way, is my fault.
NOt Crappy HP!@
Ok...I'm reading up on it and it seems to have an Intel integrated AGP video device. I believe it is a Intel manufactured 820 chipset integrated motherboard. I would try the Crystal audio sound fusion drivers. If it's a Yamaha PCI sound device, drivers are standard MPU-401 compatible drivers.
For Crystal sound drivers, try here. (http://www.cirrus.com/drivers/audiodrv/)

its a intel 810 chipset...
thanks for d link, I will try that one either way!
I might submit, and call hp. But i know that there must b a way to get the freaking driver!
I have a friend who has a HP Pav.8656C. It has the 810 chipset graphic driver pv 2.1.
The sound is a Riptide PCI. He has the original disks with a few different drivers on them. If you can't find them let me know and maybe I could get a copy and e-mail them to ya.

Hey ZZZREYES,
this soundcard of yours, this wouldn't happen to be a combi card of sound and modem???
If it is, I feel sorry for ya. Why???
Cause these would be "riptides", the worst cards I've ever seen.
At my work, they fail by many, and I really mean many.
I have to test the defect components, and those cards I get about 200 a week from.
And that is with a production rate of 10k a week.
