My new CD-RW can burn at 1200kb/sec but my CD-ROM can only do DAE at 624kb/sec. I'm effectively limited to 4x when doing audio.
This, of course, means I need a new CD-ROM drive. (Still have to convince the Mrs. of this...)
Anyone know of a good IDE drive with a high DAE speed? Maybe a site with comparison ratings?
i'd say the plextror 40x would be your best bet, as it is cheaper and its DAE is around 23x or so.
here is a link to it:

Very nice drive, but I'd like to get an IDE drive, not SCSI.

I found the Asus 50x drive(Asus CD-S500) cheap enough & extremely reliable, a friend has the 40x drive & it works well for him. I wasted a lot of money on 3 different CD's including drives from Aopen & Creative. The other drives were fantastic with data, even on scratched CD's but could not perform DAE reliably. I do not quite understand the reason why, but many of the older(12-20x) drives were more reliable at DAE than the current crop.
I have 185 of my Music CD's converted to MP3 without a snap, crackle or pop. This has only been possible since i bought the Asus. The page above lists other drives that are faster, though I cannot comment on their reliability.
Good Luck. Krusty

Thanks Krusty! That's exactly what I was looking for!
I'll probably go with the TEAC CD-540E - that should cover me until they come out with a burner that can write at 30X!
