Coins too perhaps?
Its has been an addiction for me all along.
Once you start to pop, you can't stop. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
I tried doing it with a knife a couple a times, but never since...

Last time I did it, I was in the first grade and I flipped it over a big divider in the common room and it stuck in the top of a girls head. My buddy ratted me out and I missed recess over that little episode http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

hmmmmmm, not sure what pencil "flicking" is.
Whenever I use a pencil, I simply must bite it and imprint my teeth marks on it. I don't chew or gnaw it. But I just feel compelled to sink my teeth into the soft pencil wood for some reason. That's probably why I prefer mechanical pencils (I don't feel compelled to eat them).
Now pens OTOH. Whole 'nother story. If it's a plastic "BIC"-type ball point pen, then I will chew the end mercilessly. And chew on the cap as well.
But if it's a pen with the push 'n' retract mechinism, then I will still attempt to chew it...but if it's uncomfortable to my teeth then I usually figit with it by unscrewing it, taking it apart, putting it back together, and generally tweeking it...99% will just break off the pocket clip for no good reason.
And yes, I'll even chew on felt tip type markers and the dreaded fountain pen. Both of which I have, at one time or another, gnawed to the point of destruction and massive ink flow in or around my mouth.
Maybe this is part of the reason I'm so into computers,...no writing utinsils to chew on. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Never figure you for a lead and ink addiction OutPaTienT,
As for pencils safe enough as long as theres no rubber bands about,if there are, then I tend to use fore finger and thumb to hold band and pencil become the arrow http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I used to chew pens in school until a buddy of mine's busted in his mouth and he had blue goo running all over his face and shirt http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I stick mainly to eating pencils now.

Pencil flicking? Like when you hold a pencil w/ your thumb, fore finger and 3rd finger and spin it over the back of your thumb so that it lands back in your hand?

I guess you guys have no clue what I'm talking about, do you?
Pencil flicking...not pencil flinging.
I don't mean using it as an arrow and fly it across the room....NO! No! No! That would be a very dangerous weapon..you could take out your teacher's eyes (WELL, that may be a good thing, eh? J/K http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif )
What I'm talking about is a technique, using a pen/pencil/coin/knife or whatever you like and run it around your fingers in a circular rotational motion.
The trick is to keep it in synch.
Once you start getting good at it, then go faster.
Once you've accomplished that try it with both hands. It looks pretty cool.
Pencils are better than pens as they are lighter and not as likely to fall off your fingers.
Lets say you're right handed.
First you hold the pencil between your first and second fingers (not your thumb and your finger).
Hold the pencil vertically, with the shorter end at the bottom of both fingers.
Use your first finger and move it up/left so that the pencil begins to spin to the left. As the pencil reaches a horizontal position, use your 3rd finger and grasp it.
Once you've grasped it, let go your 1st finger.
Now the pencil should be standing vertically between your 3rd and 4th fingers.
Now use your middle finger (the one we all use very often http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif ) and slide it up/left so that the pencil is again in a horizontal position. Again, take your pinky and take hold of the top of the pencil.
Now you should have your pencil in between your pinky and your second last finger.
Remember, when the pencil is on the far left side of your fingers (your first and second fingers) you should be rotating the pencil to the left.
Now that its at the far right (in between your pinky and second last finger), you should be rotating it back to the far left (the original position).
Only this time you don't grasp the top of the pen, you take hold of the pencil from the bottom. So now your fingers have to slide to the bottom/right to get it in the horizontal position, and use the next finger in line to hold on to the bottom of the pencil.
My explanation kinda sucks, doesn't it?
I'm not very good @ explaining stuff.
But really, this is actually very easy to do.
For older people (*cough**cough* ED_S http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif ) it'll be a great exercise to reduce arthritis!!!
Somebody wanna actually try it and tell me how goes?

Glad you cleared that up plucky.
By that definition I am a pencil flicking addict. For those of you that might still be a little foggy - it's like twirling a baton.
I am right handed so that is the better side but I have been practicing with my left when I'm not preoccupied with the right. The thing I have never been able to manage is the spinning of a writing utensil on the side of my thumb. I have seen many people that can twirl it on the side of their thumb using the index finger to get the motion going. Oh well, I can't be talented in all respects.

Yeah I am into it. I never knew it really had a name though. For those of you that still dont know what it is watch Top Gun. I think IceMan is doing it during the first briefing. It is really addictive and a great stress relief
hmmm not into pencil flicking, but I can do that thing with the knife and the splayed fingers, as seen in Dark Star and Aliens... it's a cinch when you know the technique.
Just start out with something blunt, like a chopstick... and don't use sharps when you are drunk, it hurts. Lots. LOL
