My 56k modem with x2 has gone at 28.8 for as long as i remember, wha can be the problem?

There can be many diffrent reasons why you can not connect at 56K speeds. What kind of modem are we dealing with here? Does your ISP support 56K??? How old is your modem? When was the last time you did a driver update? (suggest updating on a regular basis) Do you have a seperate line for your computer? If you do connect a phone to it and see if there is a bunch of static on the line. (if there is static have the line check by the phone company ***Dont tell them it is for your computer***) How far are you from the central office of the local telco? (if you are more than 3.5 miles from the switch you will not be able to get 56K speeds.)

Its a 3Com modem,the switch is right down the street from my house..I'll try to update the drivers..thanks for the info.
