EMF exposures, I know, a lot of you already research this issue but some haven't. I work in a electrical generation plant and have been nervous about Electro-Magnetic Fields. Several years ago I purchased a cheap Magnetic radation detector. The unit ranges from 2-30mg(milligauss) Continous exposure to levels in excess of 2mg is not reccomended. Suprisingly my plant was below the 2mg threshold but the outgoing wires pegged the machine out. This area is generally off limits, most people don't have to be told to stay out of the transformer yard. In this area, a 4ft or 8ft flourescent light bulb will light up in your hands, without touching anything, I've done it. Another suprise was the very high levels of emissions coming from small ac to dc adaptors, like ones for anything with rechargable batteries. All of these went nearly to 30mg within a few inches, a foot away was still strong, two feet and nothing detected. Electric clocks, hair dryers anything with a motor inside gives off large amounts of emf's. Remember, it is a time vs dosage in all radation exposures, just don't sleep with your head a few inches away from the old humming electric clock, the new ones with LCD displays and no motor inside are low in emmisions. Microwave ovens, tv's, computers, lights, all are very low in emf's. In short, electric motors and transformers are the culprits to avoid a close proximity, say within 2ft for long term exposure. Here's a link to the "Microwave News" get in on the short free mailing list, it's most informative. =>> http://www.microwavenews.com/ncrp1.html sincerely, DrVette

Yikes!!! Is there anything that won't speed our demise I wonder?
Given enough time we'll all end up in a dark room surrounded by nothing. Bad air, water sun, emf, etc....

Not a pleasant thought

Thanks Dr Vette. I have been very interested in the debates about the power line issues. I believe they do harm. Tests can be designed to very subtly to be too insensetive to detect bad effects. In science, we can tweak a test to see what we want to see almost at will. We have to be very careful not to do this.

Been a Power Plant pilot for 20 years, and so far nothing has fallen off, or even come loose! But as they say, time will tell.

Wow..

I've always wondered.. Would sitting at a computer for a long while have damaging, long term effects on someone's body?

I have thought about that where I work too. We have 138 Kv lines coming into our plant site,(steel mill) and we step that down to about 1500 volts to feed 2 electric arc funaces. I have been in the control pulpits when they are melting the scrap and have seen on the order of 75,000 to 95,000 amps per phase going into the arc furnace.I bet that would peg the old meter out even at a distance of several yards, you think? I don't work in production any more, so my exposure to any high strength fields are limited. I don't care says it,it can't be good for you .

Here's one for 'ya. I live in Tennessee - don't hold it against me though, it's just where my house is.

Anyway, we live like 70 miles from Oak Ridge. Atomic energy at it's best, huh? Now, I'm no doomsday fanatic, ( http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif ) but you can't tell me there's not a potential situation there.

Honestly, you cannot go a day without hearing about someone's mother or father battling some kind of cancer. I mean really, you can't find a family that doesn't either have a member with the big C, or knows someone well that has it. I've never seen such a thing in my life.

I really question my raising my kids in an environment like this. Hopefully within the next year or so I'll be able to sell the house and never look back.

Anyway, just thought that had a vague relation to the magnetic field topic.

Mike I would not worry to much about it, I am sure TVA keeps it under control.

Strange I have know people who have worked in Nuk plats for years and don't have cancer. Then again some do but it is usally related to asbestos.

I would have to say it is more likely related to chemicals used by the farmers. Unless you have a bunch of high voltege lines run everywhere and are constantly near them.
I do the best I can to stay away from all the TVA jobs especially the Gallatin steam plant. Hell the TVA scale is less anyway.

The Oak Ridge plant is close to Knoxville is'nt it? I think there are three nuk plants in Tennesse. You can read TVA's nuk page if ya wish here. http://www.tva.gov/power/nuclear.htm

desmocat; oddly enough the modern wires that are twisted cancel out the magnetic fields. The ones that are separated like Hi-Tension lines really put out the EMF's. If you check out the Microwave News site, "Only Montana has established magnetic field limits for electric field strengths on or at the edge of the rights-of-way for high voltage transmission lines ,Montana- 200 mG" What a joke, this is enough to smoke a turkey in a few hours, IMO. My thoughts are, "That in the interest of commerce, comfort of the citizens and in the interest of National Security, nothing is sacred. The health and safety of the citizens and wildlife are second class to the interests of Big Brother and Big Business. Don't forget, The Russians are Coming" Oak Ridge Tn. during WWII disposed of high-level waste by drilling 2600' wells and burying it.. How ingenious, the Russian method of dropping in the sea in 10 mile waters has proven more effective, the sediment covered it to the point where no radiation is evident(EVIDENT). In this town, Celeanese Fibers, carpet dye mfg, dumped raw dye and refuse into the river, less than 200' downstream the city water intake resided. Real smart too, us Americans think we are so **** smart we continue to shoot ourselves in the foot even though it hurts terribly. And too, we have the audacity to point fingers around the world at what others are doing, like we are the perfect nation.. RANT, RANT.. DrVette

Its so weird how many people have Cancer. It is such a horrible disease. Some people I know in the city have died from it. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I live in a rural area of about 2500 people, and there have been two or three cases of cancer here. One just arising recently.

But in the city, one big chunk of it is the Industrial region. There is a huge oil refinery and tons of emmissions from other kinds of plants.

Could that contribute to anything?
