what files does windoes upgrade need to see before it will let you install it. I know it's been posted here before and I sure can't remember.

Thanks

You can install it on a fresh hard drive with no files on it if you have an original W95 cd only. It will prompt for verification, you put the 95 cd in and wala!

Windows 98 setup (upgrade version) will prompt you for a CD or floppy from an earlier version of Windows, if you try to install it on a freshly formatted hard drive.
It does check the Windows95 CDROM for the following files: WINSETUP.BIN, the two PRECOPYx.CAB files, and all the WIN_95xx.CAB files. It is possible
to redirect the search for these files to other locations. (Alternatively, it will accept Windows 3.x install diskettes).

Hey Jin... I know how to make a win95 upgrade into a full version but the method I know does not work with 98. I would love to hear it.

Win98-> Make a Disk with these files on there. (you might need to modify.. for cd rom entries)

Io.sys
msdos.sys
command.com
autoexec.bat
config.sys
country.sys
display.sys
ega.cpi
ega2.cpi
ega3.cpi
fdisk
format
himem.sys
keyb.com
keyboard.sys
keybrd2.sys
mode.com
oemsetup.bin
oemsetup.exe

Disk 1 Find as many of these files and put on the floppy or harddrive

deltemp.com
dossetup.bin
extract.exe
mini.cab
precopy1.cab
save32.com
scandisk.exe
scandisk.pif
scanprog.exe
setup.exe
smartdrv.exe
w98setup.bin
wbl6off.exe
xmsmmgr.exe

Disk 2

precopy2.cab

disk 3 - some might not be found but all it needs is just the files from the cabs so if dont fit extract them.

precopy3.cab
catalog3.cab
base5.cab

Contents of the Config.sys File:

device=himem.sys
files=60
buffers=20

Contents of the Autoexec.bat File:

@echo off
oemsetup

Krusty Try this for win98
