I'm reffering to these threads:

http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/003804.html

http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/003941.html

Since so many people failed the last time (5 others besides me passed), the school board is giving us a retest. I don't need it, but if I get a higher mark on this test, then that mark is my permanent one. Plus I got a deal with my parents. If I get a 95% or above, I get money towards a laptop!!!

I've been studying so hard my brain is beginning to hurt, and the test is 2 weeks off. I'm gonna ace that sonova*****. Just taking a break from studying to let everyone know.

I know exactly what you mean, man. Sometimes I study so hard for my math classes that when I go to sleep I still have a problem in my brain and all night I keep dreaming about how to solve it.

Never solved one in my sleep, though.

I applaud and admire your desire to re-take the test, Dominus! - even though you don't have to (though the laptop $$ is a great incentive - kudos to your parents!)

I'm sure you'll Ace it, Dominus, as I have faith in your abilities. Now, get back to crackin' those books http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Never solved one in my sleep, though.

Then you are definately missing something. I've had dreams where math, physics, code, and poetry are all combined in a joyous symphony of understanding and epiphany. Unfortunately you forget it all when you wake up, except for the feeling of wonder.

The mind can do amazing things when it has to.

As for the math, basically all the knowledge I collected in class was etched in my brain from my marathon study session the first time around. Now I just have to flip through the book and go: "Oh yeah, I remember that" for every topic. Still doing all the examples I can find though.

yeah, math has always been one of my fav. subj., way back in Junior High when i took the Algebra end-of-course Exam, I studied maybe 2 days straight after having an average of a C in that honors class(I knew the work I just didn't do it as often), when the test came around I spent about 5 minutes on each prob. The next day I asked my teacher what I made, and he said "You aced it" I was pretty surprised since I was among the only 6 out of the whole school who actually aced it(no probs missed). Even in Elementary, when I took the TAAS one year, I made the highest grade in the whole school (it was off the charts, literally).
Right now I've gotten into a bad habit of being lazy so grades aren't as good as they used to be--I need to get off my ***** and start WORKING!! As everyone keeps telling me, "if u have the potential, use it!"

BTW, good luck on ur EXAM dominus, u definately have motivation!

what are you studying? Give us some example problems, i'm pretty sure some of us can help.

Right now i am studying integration by parts, ugh. Isaac Newton was drinking heavily when he developed calc

Dominus, good luck on the exam, as I feel you will definitely be able to make that 95%.

I have always like math. Actually according to my major, I major in Mathmatics (Computer Science Option). I have finished my major cal work, and now am concentrating on Differential Equations invloving advanced theortical concepts. Also, the course has some high level linear algebra (vector spaces, etc.).

Today, we just finished our section on using Laplace Tranforms for finding solutions to nonhomogenous linearly independant diff. eq's. At any rate, if nothing changes, this will be my last mathmatics class before my major officially changes to Computers Science (Scientific Application Development).

I fit the same profile about the studying. I commonly have to use the crash and burn learning technique, as I tend to put math off to the last possible moment. The worst I've suffered so far is this dif eq course. We has a test very early in class. I went into this class without even picking up a math book for over three semesters. Needless to day, I got to relearn several semseters of math in just a couple of days.

Good Luck,
Robert Richmond

Congratulations on attempting to better your score. At this very moment I am working on triple integrals in polar and spherical coordinates for CALC III (multivariable calc). Next fall I have to take Differential Equations. I've heard it isn't that rough though.

Dominus, make sure you lay a good ground work in the math you do now (it sounds like you are). Especially if any of your college courses will be math intensive. It will make everything that much easier for you when you get to higher level classes like CALC III or Calc in general. All of that prior knowledge will come into play. I went 2 years without math before switching to an engineering major and really had to hit the books hard to pick some of that sutff back up.

Good choice Dominus, we keep on truckin eh! the great spirit of mankind, thats why we went to the moon eh. It's in our basic foundations to learn. I hear ya as far as your head hurtin, I did the Canadian Securities Course a couple of years ago, my brain hurt then too! Good luck.

Bahhh, Engineers are so lazy about math they only chose the forms of the equations they need most and use those all the time. In just about all my classes, we always avoided the "rigorous" math and used a simple form of the equation to get the job done.

basically all the knowledge I collected in class was etched in my brain from my marathon study session the first time

Dominus, it's amazing how much you find out you knew when you review. I applaud your diligence in going back over everything. It really solidifies your knowledge.

All I say is the best of lick in getting the higher grade you want.

Here you guys are all talking about Diff Equations and such, and MAAAAAN do I feel low...I mean, I got a D+ in Alegbra II in HS and I haven't touched math since except using it to keep track of variables in me Perl programs...<g> ...and sometimes it comes in handy when you try to figure out how much all the paper in your wallet is worth when you put it all together...

Best of luck, D - if you're half as good as these guys you're still twice as good as me!

I hit diff. equations next year in calculus, right about the time I'm taking 3rd level physics, so they're gonna make physics a breeze. 11 days to test time, and I'm studying 2 hours nightly. Not gonna have much trouble with the test, but it's screwing up my Geek-Time. I've gotta learn CGI and SQL by summer so I can start my on business too. Looks like my social life is going down the drain for a while. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Listen,

I'm an old guy by your standards and I'm still doing math! And a little brain-hurt never really hurt anybody!!! You just have to unwind with a little "mental floss" -- a hobby or activity that lets you forget for a while!

Just finished a grad course in Adv. VLSI Design which empahsized mind-twisting numerical and mathematical algorithms for chip placement, layout and routing. Also working on crypto- stuff like AES and polynomial key encryption: Galois Fields and the like. Processing very long (1024 bit) payloads with very long (1024 bit) keys. The math and then the hardware implementations always keep you awake at night. And there's the reliability/availability analyses for computer and telecomm systems for my clients. With some products I've done a 20+ page theoretical assessment of the reliability model for a product (lots of integrations and conditional probabilities) and then have filled an Excel spreadsheet 15 columns wide by 800 rows deep with the numbers.

You probably don't appreciate it now, but if you choose a technical career, the math will become VERY important to you in the future.

The bottom line is you're never finished learning...keep up your math abilities and you'll be able to name your price some day!

Good luck with the retest: hopefully a 100.

Tee minus 20 hours and counting.

Stayed home today to study.

I've got this feeling that I've been spending all this time studying, but I'm only going to get maybe 2% higher than the first time. If I do, I'm gonna snap.

Been drinking so much coffee that my vision is blurring.

Back to the books for me.

Been through college and now in grad school (in addition to working full time..).

HINT: Less coffee... more sleep!
Get a good night's sleep.. lay off the coffee.. it will keep you too wired (as if the thought of the test isn't doing that already), and drink some extra water to flush some of that stuff out.

Best of luck!!!

Good luck Dominus,
Relax and take a deep breath.
Get some sleep as mudoggy suggests.
You will do just fine.

Tee minus 80 minutes and counting.

Didn't get any sleep last night. And what ever you do, don't talk about "roots", welsh wizard!

Thanks for all the support. I just have to remember that I can't do any worse than 84%

Just finished the exam then. It was postponed a day.

I have never been this mentally tired before. I want to sleep so much, but I still have 2 hours of school left.

I know I did better than before, but it's gonna be a few weeks before I get my mark back.
