Whats the deal with an AGP card and PCI slot 1?
Would there be a conflict? What limitations would a PCI card in slot 1 have?
Shouldn't the motherboard automatically assign irq's?

some motherboards share resorces for PCI 1 and the AGP some do not,it's same for the last PC and first ISA,check your mobo manual or epox's web site for info on your mobo

Does someone know if PC-Chips M577 motherboard has such compromise between PCI slot 1 and AGP slot?
I would like to add a video capture card and only have PCI slot 1 free. AGP slot is taken by Viper 550.
Thanks in advance.

An IRQ shared by PCI or AGP devices isn't a problem in itself.
As long as the drivers behave according to PCI specifications, all should be fine. Mostly PCI sound cards do not, and these then must be put in a slot that does not share its PCI INT lines with another device.
A board's PCI/AGP interrupt sharing scheme can be read from its PCI BIOS runtime functions - I have the tool to do it, but I don't have an M577 running DOS at hand currently. Just try and see what happens. Usually there's no problem even with shared IRQs.

Peter, thanks for your info!
In fact, I don't know much about the AGP/PCI slot sharing problem. I think it is more than IRQ sharing. May be other signals have to compete for bus access.
As you mention sound board IRQ sharing, I can tell you that I just installed a Sound Blaster Live Value on PCI slot 3 (three, not one) and, according to PCI BIOS info at boot, it shares int 15 with the Viper 550 installed on the AGP slot. The system seems to work 100%. The Windows 98 System Information utility confirms the IRQ 15 sharing.
I would like to know how to block the IRQ sharing, so I can check if there are performance benefits.
Before I buy a video capture board that must be installed in PCI slot 1 (last available), I want to make sure things will work. One test I thought was install the sound board in PCI slot 1, but have been told that this won't work, so I'm a bit lost.
Thanks, Dary.

My problem is quite similar to this. I have a M726, I have a viper 550 in the AGP, Network card in PCI 1, Monster sound 300mx in PCI 2 and I bought a video capture card to put in PCI 3.
First I coundn't get the game port to enable, when I tried it would just send me into a reboot loop. PC100 web site did make mention to a problem with microsoft force feedback joystick, which I have, but the instructions are so bad I can't figure it out. And, when I install the video capture card my system refuses to boot up. Any help\advice would be appreciated.
Mike
