Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Abit BE6 II - Keyboard light staying on!!!

Sounds relatively simple but I've just installed one of these boards and set everything up but after installing the IDE controller driver, whenever I shut down, there is a short beep and the NUM lOCK key light stays on! Any ideas? I can't see any conflicts anywhere and everything else works fine. If I unplug the keyboard and plug it back in, the light goes out and stays out.
This problem never happened while I was installing other components, just after the IDE controller!

IDE controller drivers? Windows installs them automaticall. You can reinstall windows if the problem presists.

There are some boards (not sure if the BE6 is one of them) that support powering on by using a key stroke combination.

If your board has that, AND its enabled in the bios, then it makes sense that the keyboard would still be getting power after a shut-down because it would be necessary to support this feature.

Thanks for the help guys.
I had another problem which I rectified but I had rebuilt my PC from scratch and it was still doing it so I think the latter reply is more likely. I'll check it out tonight.
The driver that was installed was the high point UDMA66 driver I assume as it was installed from the Abit CDrom. I'll let you know how I get on.

Like I said, I'm not 100% sure about the BE6's, but on my ABIT BF6, there is a jumper and bios setting for this. Given that the boards are so similar, I am betting that this is the case for your BE6-II as well.

From my BF6 manual, I learned the following:

On the board, there is a header (ie: jumper) to enable or disable the keyboard/mouse wake-up function. On my board, its JP1, located near the USB ports.

There is also a setting within the Integrated Peripherals section of the bios that deals with this functionality. Its called "Power on Function".

According to the manual, quote: "This item allows you to select which way you want your system to power on." "Five items are avilable: Button Only -> Keyboard 98 -> Password -> Hot Key -> Mouse Left -> Mouse Right." "Default setting is Button Only."

For in depth explanations of each, I'd suggest that you check out your manual. I'm betting this is the solution to your issue though.

I checked the manual last night and read the very bit that you quoted. I never had time to check out the PC last night though so I'll go into the BIOS tonight and check the settings. It would seem that this is the logical reason for the light remaining on the keyboard.
Hopefully, I will be able to resolve it now.

Cheers.

Target's right,

It's case the 5v standby is still feeding the PS/2 componets to support mouse/keyboard power on.

If you owned an intelli-eye you might notice the light stays on on that to.

I checked the bios last night and the keyboard power on is disabled. I tried enabling it then disabling it but the light still stays on. I'm not sure if power still goes to the keyboard even when you have disabled this option in the BIOS! It doesn't seem to affect anything else and everything works fine otherwise! If you disconnect the keyboard and the re connect it, the light goes out! I'm sure it is to do with this option as everything else seems fine!

Donka....on my BF6, you have to set the jumper I mentioned in addition to setting it in the bios. My understanding of what I read was that they both have to be done.

Hmmm, I read the manual during installation and it mentions that all 10 jumpers should be set to off if you are using softmenu 3 instead. I even tried flicking jumper 1 on and then off again, just to ensure it was properly switched off. I can enable the keyboard power on function okay through the BIOS and it works fine but I assumed that if it was disabled, the light would no longer be on the keyboard!! Like I say, I can use the BIOS to enable and disable the keyboard power on function okay, it's just this light that confuses me as it states nowhere in the manual about this light remaining on. Maybe it is supposed to but the support form for ABit is a litte bit on the big side to bother with for this small problem., I'll try emailing them anyway and get a response!
Strange one eh?

/me scratches head!

I have a BX6-2 with the same problem.

It has other problems that add up to replacement time, just saving & watching Athlon vs Coppermine and their respective boards.

Donka...the 10 jumpers that you referred to are actually dip switches, and is not what I was talking about in my previous post.

If you have not already done so, please either look at, or download your motherboard manual from ABIT.

In chapter 2, page 10 (2-10) of the manual I downloaded from ABIT, it will describe exactly what I was trying to tell you in previous messages. Read what it says about the JP1 header.

Doh!
I thought it was the same thing.
I'll check that out tonight.

Cheers.

Target, you da man!
After disabling the jp1 setting for keyboard and mouse wake up, the light now goes out when I power down.
Thanks mate, I got as far as reading that all jumpers should be set to off when using the soft menu and so never thought to check anything else! Serves me right for not the reading the manual properly!
Thanks for putting up with a motherboard newbie!

Cheers. :~)

You're more than welcome Donka. Congrats on getting your issue resolved, and kudos to you for sticking with it until you did!
