Hello.

The Dell Dimension XPS R400 utilizes an Intel 440BX motherboard, 100mhz fsb, slot 1. You are limited in the bios as you probably know, and will have to manually adjust jumpers on the motherboard. If you are comfortable doing this that is fine, but you probably will not get good results. The board Dell included is not a stable overclock board, and is its recommended use is for the 350 and 400 PII. But this doesnt mean you cant just go pop a 550 in. It should work, but no guarentees. If you plan on upgrading processor, go with an Abit or Asus board for $100 or less. Please let me know what you plan on doing? I could probably give you some better input.

Intel is Intel bud. That is the type mobo you have. I would not recommend a 600 plugged into that Dell Intel board specified for the PII 350 and 400. Save yourself some grief for both you and your sister, and go with perhaps an Abit BE6 II, 1 agp, 5pci,1ISA, ultra dma 66, and a great softbios menu. Now that you have PIII 600, dont let the motherboard hold backs its capabilities. You can pick one up from GoGocity.com for $110.

My shot in the dark guess is that they use an SE440BX board. Start looking around at Intel's website (I find developer.intel.com (http://developer.intel.com) most helpful) and compare boards until you find one that matches.

well the mobo autodetects the CPU there is no jumpers

but it sees it as 500mhz and the screen is filled with blue dots
