Building a machine (jukebox) from bits and bobs that I have lying around. With the CD drive plugged in the machine won't boot - does memory check, displays AMIBIOS version, WAIT... and then hangs. Hard disk does not spin up.

Disconnect the CD IDE cable from the secondary IDE channel, reboot and all is fine, hard drive spins up, system boots.

I've just check the TEAC web site and the CD-55A is currently configured as drive 1 (not drive 0). I assume this is slave (and not master in teac language). So I'll change this tonight and have another go. But I find it hard to beleive that this would stop the other drive powering up.

Anyone have any suggestions.

Important bits are:

486 DX2/80 PCI motherboard (unbranded - but I have identified it as a PCChips board in the past)
Seagate ST51080 (1Gb)
Teac CD-55A (quad speed)
24Mb Mem
200W PSU

All components worked well when last used.

Hey Steves, I think the jumper should be set to 0 (zero) if you're using any other OS besides ms-dos. The other jumper positions are exclusively for daisy-chaining mulitple cd drives in dos only. Check this out http://www.teac.com/dsp/cd/cd55ados.html

If only I could get as far as an OS!

I think the link holds the answer (I'm sounding like Elf!).

It's a Panasonic interface and not a IDE, lucky I didn't melt anything! CD came with a scrap case I cadged from a friend, I assumed that since it was quad speed it was IDE, but it must have been an early one.

Still the CD is not essential for this little project, I'll just have to pinch the CD from my main machine to get things up and running.

Thanks.
