Could someone recommend a good motherboard replacement for my Gateway 550e Essential PC?

You might want to open that up and verify some connections first.
Standard atx boards have one plug (20 pins I think) from the power supply to the board. The big manufacturers get "proprietary" and add extra connectors or change connectors to keep their customers from going elsewhere for anything.
If it's a standard atx board and power supply, there are several options from Asus and Abit. Also the MSI BXMaster from MicroStar.
If it's not standard, you'll need a new case with power supply and everything else should swap over.
This will void the warranty you probably have, something to consider while you are doing your research.
