how long will it take until cd-r get upto 12x or 16x speed, i told myself a couple months back that i wouldn't buy one until their upto 16x, and i assumed that it would be pretty quick after seeing the standard go from 2x to 8x. well, i was wrong? will they get that fast, or is their some type of physical limit, where i can't get any faster?

Technically no there is no speed limit but no one has bothered to design a quad laser rewrite drive "Yet" http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif.
Also as an after thought have you ever heard a 46X cd rom drive imagine it at 7200rpm. darn thing would sound like a F-18 eagle taking off.
The main thing that will advance rwrite technology is the usage of multiple lasers to write data with. with the next gen cpu and the 10000 rpm HD you will probably see multi laser re writers come on the market.
For right now systems are bottle necked by the limitations of HD speed so a 4X rewrite will suit you fine seeing as how they have dropped below the 200 dollar mark.
Rrw drives are'nt all that expensive now days. I personally use a HP 4X4X24 rw drive and have no complaints about speed. But if you,re a speed demon go with an 8x.

There have been 12X burners out for a while now. http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=186134

My 8x burner cooks a 650mb disc in about 9 minutes flat. A 16x would (theoretically) do it in 4 1/2 - not much of a difference when you think about it. Especially considering that you can do it in the background while working on other things.
Take the plunge, man, yer missing out.

I just recently bought a 4x/8x Panasonic (SCSI) and she'll burn a cd in about 18 - 20 mins (depending on size). Which really isn't a whole heck of a lot of time when you are reading and posting to message boards on www.sysopt.com (http://www.sysopt.com) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Just got my free trial of Maximum PC today. It had an ad by Plextor for a SCSI 12x write/4x rewrite/32x read drive. Pretty fast.
I have a 4/2/24 drive that I got with a computer last fall. Now it is really slow compared to others. Technology grows fast.
