Go here RIGHT NOW!!!
http://www.apple.com/trailers/newline/lord_of_the_rings/
This is the semi-long trailer for the first Lord of the Rings movie, The Fellowship of the Ring. It might not mean much to you if you haven't read the books, but if you're nerd enough to be here, then chances are you have read it already. If not, go to your local bookstore and get it NOW!!!
I definately suggest the largest size if you have the bandwidth and time to spare.
It looks like they've actually done a good job on this. It's been in production since 1998, and the director realizes the responsibility that the honor of making this movie comes with. I guess he also realizes the Oscar potential in it too. They've got some great ideas and characters, as well as *****in' special effects and makeup.
I'm just hoping that it won't get commercialized like Star Wars. If a LOTR happy meal comes out, we'll all know it's doomed.
But this trailer has definately given me new hope in this movie.
AHHH!!!! - COOL!!! - Can't WAIT!!!! - Definitely something which will go into the DVD collection ASAP!!!

I read the books when I was little, kinda neat to see them become a movie. I'm glad they're taking their time with this one.
I can see the trailer, but can't find any way to save the*.mov file on my system - any ideas? - it's running in quicktime 4.

I would recommend reading The Hobbit first though then Lord of the Rings, you will have a better understanding of the whole story. These are four books I would highly recommend to anyone.

Heheh Faramir, not much of a surprise that you're a fan...
It's astounding how much detail Tolkein put into this story. Language translations, rune alphabets, geneaology (sp?). If you read bits and pieces of Silmarilion it gives you the feeling that LOTR is just the tail end of a story with a deep history.
I hope the director tries to cater more to the literary world by being true to the novels rather than catering to Hollywood and making it all action/drama.
Not likely considering the cast. He's doing his job, and his job is to make money, and action/drama is where it's at.

Maybe not in the 1st book. But Faramir was active in the last 2. They haven't cast him yet, but they should pick...Bill Pullman. He could easily play the role of an all around nice guy who does his job and doesn't ask for the lime-light.
They should have put more thought into their choice for Aragorn (played by Viggo Mortenson)(Weps from Crimson Tide) since he's a VERY central character to the entire series. He's ok but they should have had someone darker and more brooding. Like Keifer Sutherland.

I'm not familiar with viggo-- I don't care who they would pick they wouldn't be good enough to play Aragorn http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I saw somewhere they were adding scenes for Liv Tylers character Arwen, so it doesn't sound like they will stick to the novels.

I only hope the make the others, a few years ago they did a cartoon version which stopped before the end of the story, there was supposed to be a follow up cartoon but it never came.
Now to try and view this trailer with a slow copper wire connection and an exchange that was installed by Alexanda graham Bell http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Roll on the film getting to the big screen.

Adding scenes for Liv Tyler? ****, I had hoped they'd avoid stuff like that. Arwen Evenstar was only a minor character, and only appeared during the counsel of Elrond, and near the end when she married Aragorn. They have a scene of her in the trailer riding a horse, and she didn't do that in the novels.
And theres gonna be action figures, and happy meals, and halloween costumes, and a cartoon series, and video games...
Reality is starting to kick in, and it's not pretty. Remember how far they went with The Phantom Menace? I just hope they don't portray Sam as another "Jar Jar Binks".

WW -- The people who made the animated version of The Hobbit also made the second half of that animated LotR titled Return of the King. These movies were alot better IMO than that first animated LotR movie. Also you may have already seen this site but in case you haven't take a look:

Thank-You very much Dominus. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I was able to put it on a Zip disk for a friend with a slow connection.
Dave
I always figured Aragorn as someone a lot more weathered after all that travelling... I always figured Clint Eastwood or Jurgen Prochnow... oh well... I guess they are getting on a bit now...
As for Boromir, it should have been Schwarzenegger! Sean Bean's a fine actor, but Boromir is your typical AD&D grunt http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
I don't hold out much hope for the film sticking to the book - the director is rather good (Bad Taste, Heavenly Creatures) but I feel the NZ location is riding on the back of the Xenia/Hercules crew, and I don't expect it to look too different...

Hey Faramir! You gonna let him talk bout your brother like that? http://thedam.com/cwm/smile/net/laughing.gif
Hey, I'm confused. IMDB says they've cast (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0120737) King Theoden, Saruman, and Wormtounge.
These characters don't appear till 2-towers if I'm not mistaken, it's been awhile.

Cheers Faramir, now all I have to do
is figure out where I can get the
video, as I have not seen it available
Here in NZ,
I was wondering who had sent the page
into freak mod, Dominus that long URL
http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
As for the Lord of the rings we get more
info off the net than local, man u would
think that some thing being film only a
few hundred K's south of us would have
a bit more info out there in local press.

hd581,
Yeah, I will still see star wars and Matrix, but in terms of "fan-boy" LOTR is the series for me http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Star wars is great but I enjoy the story behind LOTR so much more.

hd581--lol actually I agree with u-96, thats how I picture Boromir too. Also I saw on a site that all the movies will be done at the same time just released a year apart--bummer huh? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
WW--- I haven't looked but I bet you could find that video online-- if not let me know maybe I can find it here for ya http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

It's not been released in NZ, so if it's
outside the country (New Zealand that is) I
have to find some one who will buy it, then
ship as present, means I have to locate
product, find some one prepared to buy on
my behalf as soon as I have sent them the
money when they get it they have to post it
to me, Any volanteers,

Arrgh! I won't be able to watch it. I used to read "Lord of the Rings" every year and each time would find something new (helped to take a few courses on mythology).
Liv Tyler as Arwen?? She doesn't have the dignity or presence. What whippersnapper could play Aragorn, who should have been about 90 years old at the time that Lord of the Rings takes place? The beauty of those old books is their restraint: probably the movie will cram Tolkien's masterpiece into the "fight every ten minutes, scantily clad females every half hour" mould that we know and love so well.
Will they be able to resist showing Sauron in the flesh? Will they show him cackling with glee, stalking a replica of Castle Greyskull, stroking a pet cat? Part of the great dread in the books is that we never see him directly: he colors every action like an illness or an overcast sky.

Your probably right there Jeana, but that
cartooned version was really well done, and
quite close to the book, at least thanks to
Faramir if I find a version of the second
part at least I will be able to buy it and
see how well they did the second part http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

You're right, W.W., it wasn't that bad for
the three minutes I could bear to watch. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
I'm just one of those people who can't stand
to see movie versions of novels. I'll also
keep an eye out for the 2nd half of the
cartoon LOTR for you.
I guess that at least the release of the
movie will get a lot more people (especially
young'uns) to read or reread the trilogy: a wonderful gift.
I first read the books when I was nine years
old and they hooked me on reading, ultimately
making me the person I am today (successful,
well-read, a happy nerd).

And don't stop at the trilogy -- I've read everything I could find of his. the Silmarillion is a favorite of mine as well (which I read often until I loaned it out a year ago and never got it back. Need to buy a new one...)
I have actually more than 1 copy of LotR, in fact I should have a deluxe special set coming to me soon!! =]
