Does anyone know anything about this motherboard? It's apparently made by some company then sold under several different names...Alton, Amptron, and others. It's a socket 7 with built in agp video(up to 8 meg shared), built in sound, modem, and a lan card. I'm just looking for a good all around board to build some systems to sell. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something that's going to act like the normal "family" pc. Anybody? Thanks. Casey

The M599LMR is a decent board for home or office use. Not an overclocking board! I have built a few with this board without problems... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

The 599LMR is made by PC-Chips, and works well for a normal use PC.

It's made of SiS 530 and 5595 chips for the core chipset, graphics, IDE, and USB. Sound and modem come from a C-Media 8738, and LAN is an SiS 900.

If you want to build several units, here's a hint for you - PC-Chips also offer their mainboards in "pre-systems" that come preassembled in MicroATX cases with a HDD carrier, CD-ROM and floppy disk drives, along with a retail box that has room for keyboard, mouse, speakers and other bits and pieces. Just add RAM, a processor and a harddisk.

Maybe you check with your local importer if they have them. Saves you a lot of work.

They're all made by Alton - they're sold under the brands of PCCHIPs, PC100, etc.

Sorry, not quite. They're made by Hsin Tech manufacturing, their trade name is PC-Chips.

There are lots of large importers and small resellers that sell those boards under their own name. Alton is one of them.

Ahh. Someone else on the board said they were all made by Alton.

Excellent board except it you want to run Linux. There maybe a Linux video driver out there for this board but I havent found one yet. If anyone knows of one I would appreciate hearing.

Take a look at the Linux VGA installation guide in the device drivers section at;
www.amptron.com (http://www.amptron.com) ... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Thanks for all the info guys. I've been kicking around the idea of starting a small custom build and service business. I really like the looks of this board just for your average "home" or "business" pc. Just wasn't for sure on the quality issue. Thanks again. Casey

For Linux, everything's there.

VGA is SiS 530 - driver written with assistance from SiS.

IDE is an SiS 5513 functional unit, well supported.

Sound is C-Media 8738. Driver written by C-Media.

LAN is SiS 900 or Davicom 9102. Either chip is natively supported by current Linux.

Even the software modem (C-Media 8738 integrated PCTel unit) has a working Linux driver pctel.o. Somewhat hard to find, but AFAIK the _only_ HSP softmodem that has a non-Windows driver.

What more could one want?
