I went to Fry's to buy parts to build a computer for my supervisor. I figured I should get PC-133 RAM for future upgradability. I planned on getting a coppermine, but after realizing it would push me over the budget, got a Celeron. I figured I could get PC-100 RAM to help me stay within budget, and lo and behold, THE PC-100 RAM WAS MORE EXPENSIVE! I was trying to figure this out, and I asked the guy working there, and he told me that the RAM has to be rated at the same speed as the FSB it will run on, and that PC-100 RAM is more popular. I gave him a "you're an idiot" stare, and ended up with the PC-133. Why is it cheaper though?

Could be due to availability, or simply they paid more for the PC100 than they did for the PC133...... then again, maybe the same dork that tried to feed you that line of bull does the pricing <lol>.
Thank god you knew better......many unsuspecting consumers don't!

I think all Fry's employees were trained by the same fool. A friend of mine was given the same spiel, that the RAM must match the FSB, and unfortunately she didn't know better (again, the PC100 was more expensive than the PC133). Sigh...

Doesn't suprise me about Fry's.....
I have been into 3 different Fry's stores in the Bay Area of CA and they were moron's.
And the Fry's down here in Arlington TX isn't any better. For retail prices though..... Fry's is pretty good.

Fry's is pretty good with prices, and their return policy. Which is why it bugs me when this happens.

Ya, their returns are real good, for instance, if you bring back an open video card and it is broken in half, they just take it, put shrink wrap on it, and sell it as new!

I think you will find that the production runs on PC100 are being brought to an end, as the main memory is now PC133 and will so be over taken by even faster Ram,
every looked at EDO ram lately, no longer made and an arm and a leg to buy new http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
So it boils down to supply and demand in the end.

By looking at the above posts,it must be a company wide scam to rip people off on the ram. I was in the fry's in arlington tx and heard the same line of ****! After hearing the "computer dept" (aka yesterday's dishwasher salesperson )tell a guy that, it pissed me off so I walked over and told him that indeed PC-133 would work in a 100 Mhz fsb board as long as the slots were the same( 168 pin,etc..). I got a go to hell look from the employee.
I thought "man, I feel bad taking commission from her I should say I'm sorry... YEAH! exactly 10.683 seconds after hell freezes over http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
