I had an Abit bh6 with a celeron 333 overclocked to 415 or so. I gave that to my dad and built an ASUS K7M with 600MHZ Athlon. The Athlon system seems slower? Sometimes the mouse cursor dissappears when I'm moving around and I have to wait for it to come back.

What really perplexes me is that the hard drive seems slower too. My dad's system has a Maxtor 30 gig (board is ata-33) while the athlon/asus has a 27 gig western digital (board is ata-66). Both drives are ata-66 compliant, 7200 rpm and I checked to make sure the WD drive and board were both running in 66 mode.

Any ideas?

Need more info.

Is your cache set to the right divider???
Is this athlon running normally, or is it o/c'ed to 600??

My 650 athlon races through things a hell of a lot faster then my celeron 466@600.

It could be that the difference between the celeron and athlon isn't all that noticable for small programs, for they both have a full speed 128Kb cache on-die.

Only the athlon has an extra half speed 512Kb.

Just my little opinion

Pim.

Try to go to AMD site, i have K7M with 600Mhz not yet o/c, Maxtor 15.3Gb 72,000rpm.
I experienced that too. I followed the set up preparation from AMD, now it is running very well.

ok,
I'm a new at all this build your own stuff, (that celeron system was my 1st) so maybe I shouldn't have tackled an AMD system so soon.

The system is a 600 mhz out of the box, I overclocked to 660 mhz and it is still slow. I'm not sure what the cache divider is or where to change that?

I did notice that when I turned it on for the 1st time, it couldn't get to the cd drive to load some of the drivers, but I loaded the drivers from the asus cd the next time I turned it on. So I'm going to try it again to see if I can get get the cd workin' right away and if that'll help.

I'll also check the amd website.

thanks for the advice

isn't there a bios update for the K7M that will fix this?

I went to the ASUS website and downloaded the latest bios. After flashing my bios I performed winbench. Now all winbench measures are higher than they were with celeron and it just feels fast too!

Thanks again
