I was nosing around on Ebay, and there are more than a handful of posts from people selling "information" on how to get MS Office 2000, and other products from Microsoft for $99.
One guy even had a pic of a set of CD's in a binder with a book. Is it some sort of developer's tools or something like that?

Search Office 2000... you'll see what I mean.

They charge anywhere from .50 to 2.00+ dollars for this info...

So what's the deal? Sounds kinda like a scam to me, but it made me curious enough to ask.

Any thoughts?

Well, you can get it on Ebay for just around 115 - 150 for Off2000 Prof...

I just wondered what the scam was out of curiousity... there are even some that say you can get it for free! LOL!!!
Sure you can....

The scam is that they give you info on Microsoft events (that are already listed on Microsoft website). You can go to these events and sometimes get free CD's of software.

One of my instructors at school got Windows 2000 this way. But don't buy the scam on ebay, just do a little searching on Microsoft Website.

Hahahahah!!!
I knew it would be something like that!

It likened it to calling those 1-800 numbers or buying the newsletters that give you lists and #'s to get that "surplus gov't equipment and law enforcement seizures"... the cars, boats, jacuzzis, etc.. on the cheap!
You know what I mean.. you've seen the ads in magazines..

LOL!

http://www.microsoft.com/directaccess/training/sales/hotkit/win2000.asp

Got the *NFR* MS Office pro for $100 at:
http://www.microsoft.com/directaccess/Training/sales/hotkit/officehotkit.asp

Umm, your technically a reseller if you pay for a business license, but some folks who sold their old sys with software consider this reselling...to each his/her own. Enjoy

This sort of thing only tells you about the software and where it's at, in fact some of the info may even be out off date, IE MS Office Prem NFR was available to OEM's and Direct Access members in Australasia for $145 NZD when it launch the offer came to an end not sure if they do the same to USA based OEM's and DA members.
like all info CD's if you look you will find the info for free that they are selling, if the sellers make a few Bucks good luck to them, after all they put the info together for those who are to lazy to find it for them selves.

Smells like a scam to me. Office 2000 SBE retails for around $400. I bought my copy WITH my computer for $130.

I'd be interested to know how it is possible to get an individual copy for under $100.

whatever...

I agree W.W. it seems that just about any thing is for sale on the net.

The reason Direct access is a good deal is the S/W is legal and the online course is very helpful in understanding a product that will be a defacto standard in the fortune 1000 company's (if not now, very soon).

Also note that the W2k hot kit was posted as expiring on Feb. 15th, so at least MS has extended the offer...

So the hotkit contains the full software version and a tutorial? It seems as though you need to be some sort of service provider, whether it be installer, programmer, or reseller. So how do they check up on this?

A friend of mine fell for it, the stuff was for a show two years before and sold as "you do not need to go to those shows!" Once you were in the package (which was a cd-r sold for $5 with no label or jewel case, and which arived scratched) the claim was slightly changed, "You do not need to go to the developer meetings, but to claim the software, you must attend".

I think I figured that out, after all I can read. What I meant is, anyone including Bubba can claim to be a "consultant" for telling his friend to buy AMD instead of Intel. Does he qualify for the hotkit? Seems to me Microsoft left themselves wide wide open to abuse here. As long as this software has full versions, you can bet cdr's across the country will be burning Microsoft love.

Killer Bug,
you do not need to attend any Tech Net seminars to purchase the Hot Kits. But attending them, your chances are incressed to receive it free. The Developer Tech meets are are differant animal.

wyrn, that is why the kits are sold. From what I understand, the academic versions are almost as popular as the OEM boot leg. It seems to be the nature of the business.

Heck, I've even burned Office 2000. I HAVE NOT ILLEGALLY SOLD IT. It was for my other computer so I wouldn't have to move the disks back and forth incase something went wrong. Not completely neccessary but easier.

Umm,wryrn, I think your confusing this offer with the OEM dealer licensing program through MS and their affiliates.

MS will not verify because there is no restiction, most of you kind folks in this BBS have consulted, so by definition you qualify:

Microsoft Direct Access Hands-On Training (HOT) Kits (US, Canada and Puerto Rico Only)

The HOT kits live up to their name.
They are all-encompassing kits designed especially for consultants and resellers, that deliver just about everything you need to know to evaluate, learn, sell and service Microsoft products. Use the HOT Kits to get the information and skills you need today so you can put them to use in your business tomorrow.
Ref: http://www.microsoft.com/directaccess/training/sales/hotkit/

This program, through direct access is MS's way to help the channel acclimate to new programs. This falls under their training division, which is kind of working with the PR (OEM/VAR) and product marketing.

Please remember, you will NOT receive an OEM license with this product. This is an Evaluation copy, not to be confused with OEM.

I originally ordered the W2K & O2K hot kits in January and received the NFR O2K premium and RC2 of the 3 W2K flavors(have not even tried the server OS's). Since this is loaded on my test H/D, I am not in conflict with the EULA.

Definition of Not For Resale EULA:
If the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is labeled "NOT FOR RESALE" or "NFR," then, notwithstanding other sections of this EULA, your use of SOFTWARE PRODUCT is limited to use for demonstration, test, or evaluation purposes and you may not resell' or otherwise transfer for value, the SOFTWARE PRODUCT.

Note, does anyone know where this agreement is on the MS site?
