As long as you remain a PeoplePC member, we'll replace your computer every three years with a new, up-to-date model and, if you choose, give your old one to a needy school or charity. But until then, you'll have our telephone support to keep you up and running. And if any hardware defect ever rears its ugly head, your warranty means a technician comes to your house and fixes it for free.

I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH THIS COMPANY. JUST ASKING YOUR ALL'S THOUGHTS.

A little pricey for that, but if they are still in business in 3 years and they replace it is a good deal. another thing i would look at is if you will print a lot check the price on replacement ink for the printer (see if it's a ripoff).

I would say no, but mostly because I hate the fact that the name Marc John Jeffreys is taking up space somewhere in my brain.

Think about it, not only do you get a decent pc, BUT you get 'net access also. Sure you can get freewwweb, and all that ****, but with this, you get no banners, AND if you have problems, you can b*tch about it. That's hard to do when it's a "free" service, huh?

I think for someone who occassionaly plays games, but uses it mostly for surfing, e-mail, etc. This looks like a good deal. I mean, do you need an 850 Athlon to surf? HA!

I know, I don't need one either, but I'd like one HA!

Anyway, there's my 2 cents....

I agree with you grandslammer.

It would be primarily for surfing, word processing, and research.

I was thinking with what all you were getting, (software, hardware, internet service and all) it was a pretty good deal.

If you were to add all of the things up seperate you would pay more. Especially if you add in the cost of 3 years worth of ISP.

Freewwweb does not have banners, FYI, but you do have to use their homepage. I still think my cely 450 rocks along and I use it for more than word processing. Gaming, napster, image editing, etc.. Anyway, the price looks ok. I am wary of any deal where you are stuck in payments for 3 years. Bottom line is you could build it for cheaper yourself up front. And then in three years, you could build yourself another one for cheaper. See? They are getting your long term dollars because you almost have no choice but to stay with them once you join, otherwise you lose $$ on the deal. I mean, a 400 is pretty fast now. But with processors doubling in speed every 18 months, how fast is that puppy gonna be then? Not trying to be all negative here, but I always think it is better to pay up front than financing. Say in 18 months you want to upgrade. Then you can take your parts and sell them out toward a new computer. You cannot really do that here, because you stuck paying 3 years of service, and unless you get a FULL 3 years out of that computer, then you just lost money. Pretty **** smart buisiness plan for them, but if you have a little extra time on your hands, then build your own. Just my opinion http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

No its not really a value at all. barebones Athlon systems are going for under 400 dollars now.

If you have a half way modern system using PCI cards and PC 100 ram then its way cheaper to construct your own pc than too go into the so called free deal Ive seen listed by alot of places.

Even if you dont own your own comp its still cheaper to build a sys yourself than to go into a 2 or 3 year contract with an ISP that you may become dissatisfied with.

P.S you may have to go with some budget parts at first but in the long run they will thank themselves for not agreeing to a 3 yr contract. Because it seems the budget parts cost you alot less than a free pc.

I recommend you help out your friend before before they sign away 3 yrs worth of cash for something allready becoming obsolete.

If the company seriously intends to commit to theyre agreement fine and great. I guess it boils down to ive allways been leery of anything that comes for free.

shh. don't tell anyone, i use freewwweb, but don't have freewwweb as my start page and i havent been to their home page in a long time. I must have fallen thru the cracks.

If I didnt fry my 486, I'd still be using it.
It would be 5 years old in november, had it lived.

For a first PC, it's ok, tho a little pricey.

Being the sinic that I am what happens if the company goes bang, does the contract still hold and at the end of three years you can still give it to a school, if so seems reasonable, if you consider you can biuld cheaper but may not have the benefit of some one else doing the repair work for free, etc.then your time saved could outweight the extra.

I just saw a reveiw on them and it seems like a decent deal to me. Ford is useing them to provide computers for their employees, so it looks as though they will stay in bussines. Also you get three years on-site tech support, that has to be worth a couple hundred dollars.

An ISP cost about $19.95 a month X 36= $718.2

I think everything that's been stated so far is valid. For a lot of us geeks who know where to get the deal and wouldn't be happy with dialup, we could definitely build a faster PC cheaper, and probably wouldn't mind spending some money on DSL or Cable.

But for "normal people" with no ability or desire to build their own PC I'd say that this is an excelent deal. It provides a price low enough that a lot of people who might not buy a PC otherwise can get one. I know several people who've gotten PCs on plans like this and been pretty pleased with them.
