I want to upgrade from HP 7570 CD writer to either HP 9110 or 9310. My question, is it recommended that I uninstall my CD writer software including my Adaptec software and then install the software which comes with the new CD writer ( I know I must install the new drivers for the writer) or can I leave the software in the computer and just exchange the CD writers as they are from the same company. A friend who works at a computer store who would sell me the CD writer says that all I have to do is exchange them and the system would autodetect on the boot up, and then I would install the new drivers. Any info?

What he said should work fine. The drivers should not conflict or take up much disk space.

Much of the extra cost of the HP CDR's is for their SW package that comes with them. However, if you already have the Adaptec SW (which is the heart of the HP SW) then you might not want to pay extra for an HP drive unless you are already getting a great deal on it anyway.
