Anybody know how I can get a 3MB file (or a 40MB OS for that matter) on floppies? I'm trying to install the 3MB modem driver to my notebook. If I get this one on, then I can DL the rest...hmm, any suggestions? Am I really going to have to burn (waste) a CD on a 3MB file?
Well, easiest way would be an external zip drive, but I assume you'd already have done that if possible...
Have you tried to zip the file, or is it already fully compressed?
Main thing I wanted to say is that you wouldn't be wasting a CD if you burn it. Just do a multisession disc & leave the disc open. You can always add to it later. You'd only be wasting about 25mb of the disc due to the creation process using about 20mb per session.

Ed, thanks, and that gives me another idea...I think I probably have a few 'ruined' CD's around (buffer underruns etc.) I'm sure the sessions weren't closed out...I knew there was a good reason I didn't throw those away... Thanks!

Here is where you can get WinZip.
Download the free version and install it on both systems (it fits on one disk). It will allow you to not only compress the file, but it will "span" it across multiple floppies.

Dave, I already have WinZip on both systems...but I didn't realize that I can 'span' 2 floppies...I'll try that first...I was just getting ready to write a CD...I'll try this first.
Thanks...
I'm pretty sure buffer underruns DO leave the rest of the disc usable, but only if the original attempt was a multisession setup. If it was a disc-to-disc copy I doubt it'll be usable.
<edit> I COMPLETELY forgot about winzip's spanning, thanks Dave!

FYI,
If you ever need it, just select "new archive" and select "A drive", when the "Add" box comes up next, make sure the box "multiple disk spanning" is set to "auto". When you add the file, it will prompt you when one floppy is full and you need to add another. Same when you go to put them back together on the second computer.
Hope you get the notebook up and running Butler. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks Dave, I was just reading about that in the Help files...for future reference, is there any reason this wouldn't work to transfer BEos to my old laptop (which has only a floppy drive and 500 something MB HDD? I think this should work (if I can find a 50 pack or so of floppies) The version of BE I downloaded is about 40 MB I think...that'll take forever, but I may try it some rainy day...(is it supposed to rain tomorrow?) Thanks guys...

My desk PC is returning an error message when I try to write the .ZIP file to A: "Error writing a: blah blah blah..." Then, if I take the disk to the notebook and try to open it, it returns another error: "unrecoverable error while opening
blah blah blah...." Guess I'll try a CD after all...

Well, the CD eventually got the files to where they needed to go, but I had to actually close the disk after writing to it to make the notebook ROM drive recognize it. After all that here comes the fun...installing the drivers and making them work...Wow, and it's only 3am...should be done with this by Noon on Sunday easy. Thanks for your help guys...

Here is your solution!
Search for software like split file or planet split ,may be shareware. They split
the files into any size u want then install
the same software on other pc & after transferring files of 1.44 mb will recombine the software u install.
for more contact me on e-id.

I'll look into that for next time swan ...problem solved for now. I got the modem driver installed, and downloaded the rest of the drivers I needed straight to the notebook. I do, however want to try to get BEos on a different notebook which has only a floppy drive, so I'll be looking into that. Thanks!

This is the sort of thing that WinRAR is excellent for! In my opinion, it's much better than WinZip. You can get it from here: www.rarsoft.com (http://www.rarsoft.com) .

I agree with Dominus. Winrar is a lot better than Winzip.I think it also makes smaller compressed files.

Yep WinRar rules.
Be sure to check it out. I think it works way better than WinZip.
Also WinAce works well too. You could download them @ http://www.hotfiles.com just do a search for them.
