I don't get it...

One day upon bootup out of nowhere (or so it seems) Win98 tells me it detects new hardware; PCI Bridge, and wants to install software for it.

I have checked Asus' web pages (my board is a P2B) and there is no info about the PCI Bridge. For now I have ignored the device (it shos in the Device Manager with a yellow icon) but I am afraid to guess what problems thismight be causing me.

Any suggestions???

Thanks!

Adam

Jad,

what you refer to is a PCI-to-PCI bridge, which will be listed by Windows 98 as such in the "System devices" category.

The "PCI bridge" seen in "Unknown Devices" usually is the power management unit in the chipset. These usually identify as "PCI-to-I2C bus bridge" type of device. They cannot be handled by generic drivers, and need support files from the chipset vendor (as seen on Intel, VIA and AMD chipsets).

Some ID totally different and get listed as "PCI card", chip vendor's driver will make it get listed correctly (as seen on SiS chipsets).

Scope out your ASUS cd it has the drivers on it. I believe that it is the sixth selection on the pop up install screen.

Hi,

I can't figure out what is exactly going on in your pc, but maybe this will help.

Your pc has a few buses, each of which has its own specification. In modern computers the processor is connected to the PCI bus. In order to communicate with for example the ISA bus there must be a "BRIDGE" from the PCI bus to the ISA bus.

In other words the "bridge" connects two DISSIMILAR hardware "specifications" to each other,

For a more thorough explanation and more answers then quentions you can ask see
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/chip/func/bus.htm

Good Luck!

OK...I still don't get it. This machine has run fine in the past without the PCI Bridge being detected as new hardware. Suddenly this shows up and I just can't figure out where to locate the driver for it.

I have checked ASUS' webpage to no avail.

Better question... Anyone out there have an ASUS P2B motherboard running Win98? Let's start from there.

Had the same problem after installing my P3B-F last night. Here's how I took care of it:

Go into Control Panel|System|Device Manager.
Select the PCI Bridge (with the yellow question mark).
Click Properties.
There will be a button for Reinstall Driver. Click it.
Windows will go through a few gyrations looking for the driver. Then it'll ask you to load the Windows install disk in the CD-ROM. Do that, and Windows will resolve the driver "conflict".

Someone told me that Mikeysoft wrote different drivers for different architectures. When you change the mobo, you need to reinstall some drivers.

I had to reintsall the PCI Bridge, Keyboard, and Print drivers this way (from the Windows install CD-ROM), even though I am using the same keyboard and printer.

Simple to do, really, and takes care of the yellow question marks in Device Manager.
