Missing the point

I was just playing around with my GlobalWin fan, and I decided to see how fast it would run at 5 Volts. So I hooked it up in one of the Hard Drive wires (dumb me, I did this while reading a post on this forum, so the computer was obviously running). I put it in, and the fan ran perfectly. THen, I let go, but the stinkin black and red wires touched while still sortof in the socket. There was a big fireworkshow, and my computer shutdown. I was jsut about to kill my self, but I decided to boot it up and see what happens, and YAAAAAY! It still works! Man, I would be DEAD if I smoked tis CPU, because my parents would kill me!

I definitly learned my lesson here.

I'm gonna refrain from making any comments here, other than: I hope you learned your lesson.

Glad to hear all is intact and you didn't get killed http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif And now, you know how to spell R-E-L-I-E-F http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Did something like that, tried to hook up a hard drive while the computer was on (we're not exactly talking hot swappable here http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif ) Computer shuts itself off.

No fireworks though. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I'll have to touch it w/ the red wire (12v) instead of the yellow one (5v)....

man has through out history learnt by his mistakes, or at least he should have, human nature to destroy in order to find out, at least this time no distruction.

Although I have managed to burn up my share of electronic circuits in teh past, the biggest scare of my life is more related to doing 360's on I95 at over 160MPH.

So, the way I see it is, so what if I burn up a PC...I just sitback and laugh about it cause it really doesn't mean anything.

PS: I'm glad you did not screw up your PC though.

If that's the biggest scare of your life, you are one lucky person.

That was the biggest scare of my life, because thiis is my ONLY computer, and I can't afford to get another CPU or motherboard right now, and that would mean that I couldn't even poist stuff her!

Hopefully, this type of thing only happens ONCE!! I was working on my 'puter, had my tape drive pulled out setting on it's back on top of metal case, (still plugged in).
When I booted...Sparks AND smoke! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif
'Puter still OK...Tape drive?...Well? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I remember I tried installing a card without turning the computer off. Not too smart... fortunately (?) I suppose, my finger hit the CPU fan and the computer froze before I could put the card in. That might have been really bad. Anyway, the way I see it, you never really make a mistake if you learn from it. HA! That was pretty stupid of me though!

Yeah, I've had lots o' things like that happen to me - tightening a serial port thing, it slipped and shorted the board. I'm in the same boat as Missing The Point - couldn't afford new stuff. Worked though.

HAHAHAHAHA!!! That's funny... "misinterpreting plug and play"... anyway, I did that when I was 11 or 12 maybe, and it was because my sister was on AOL (Have since ridden ourselves of that demon), and she didn't want to log off. I should have waited, but my Sound Blaster Pro was hot in my hands. That was back in the day when computers didn't come with sound cards, the cheapest sound card you could get was around $70, AOL didn't have e-mail or internet access, and I was still typing CD\games\doom. Memories...

I remember trying to see what happenned to a fan placed in the front of the case, it wasn't working, the computer was still on, and I attempted to pull it out of it's place...bad idea http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif, I was shocked with a good amount of electricity! I gotta say though, I love that weird feeling u get when uv just been zapped with Electricity..kinda crazy I know http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Everything was fine afterwards, I fixed the fan, and the puter still works http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Whenever I decide to mess with anything inside the case, not only will I turn off the puter, but I'll unplug the Power Supply cord as well...

Accidents..accidents,
we all learn from them, right?

I've got my little list of "scares"

- accidently doing a 360 in the fog in my parent's car whilst surrounded by numerous very large oak trees.... - -no dents there...

- learning of an airforce accident involving an airforce jet loaded with nuclear warheads at an airbase I was overnighting at after the fact.... I'm still here.....

- being hit by lightening whilst sitting in a rain puddle -

anyone say anything about that explaining a few things - go ahead & laugh.....

- being discovered with a girlfriend at her house by her parents - survived that better than I expected to....

but when it comes to computers, I can't say I've had too much trouble.....

There was the time I accidently took down two call center telephone switches - but that was work related - it doesn't count - does it ????

Hehe, I did a 360 once and finished it off by going backwards through a cornfield at 50 mph. It was fully grown and I cut a swath about 150 feet long!!! You can't believe the noise that makes.

speaking of the biggest shock of you're life..... you an't seen notin yet.. I'm (used to be) and electrican...... Let's just say that I can still touch a bare 120V wire with my right hand and it doesn't hurt that bad..... I wouldn't even feel a measly 12V...... 12V doesn't even make that much of a spark either.... now... 240V when you're screwdriver is in touching it is another story.....

Speaking of screwdrivers, electritians & electricity, Dayathbon, I was told by an electritian friend some time ago, that if I worked with live wiring with only ONE hand, I would less likely recieve a shock, well...he was pretty close. I was attatching a door bell transformer to an existing basement pull chain light bulb power box with a, (thank God), wood handle screwdriver. The metal contacted metal while turning the screw and...well...When I got off the floor, rubbed my eyes, I couldn't find that screwdriver anywhere. when I returned with another one to finish my installation, there was my screwdriver, welded to the edge of the electrical box.
Gee, go figure stupidity http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Answer this for me. It seems most all of the problems you guys have are because you REFUSE TO TURN YOUR COMPUTER OFF! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I'm sure it won't mind if you kill the power, then install hardware components. of course, what do i know?

I think everyone has misinterpreted the phrase "Plug and Play"

I remember playing with my dad's voltmeter when I was about 10. I thought it would be cool to take a bulb out of a light and try to measure the juice in there. FWOOOMP! Big shower of sparks, carbon all over the probes and my hand, and the lights go out. I was able to clean up the mess before I was discovered because dad was in the garage resetting the breaker!

LOL @ Matt! great stories all...I'm apparently far behind you all in the experience department (or am I ahead in the brains department?) I've only had one such incident. I installed a RAM chip once with the power on, while I was on the phone with HP Tech support. I got a new Mo-Board out of the deal...The techie's response was..."Oh SH*T, did I forget to tell you to shut off your machine first?" Hehe...wander how long that guy was a techie?
