With desktops it was fun and all that, but it'd be interesting to see if one can actually put together a notebook.

Is it technically possible? I guess component compatibility would be an issue, eh?

Just my thoughts on it.

Put together a notebook???

Technically it is absolutely possible!

"Cost effective" is another issue altogether.......

there are few problems with that. Electrical interference, heat, space, the list goes on.

He adds absolutely nothing to the board, and should be pruned *edit*...if he does not heed the warnings.

There aren't enough standards in laptop design to make it economically viable. A laptop is much more integrated product than a desktop in which every part has a designated place...ha, and even colour coded in some places.

Explain yourself: What does Retarted mean? You might have ment retarded, which is offensive to those with diabilities. What did you mean to say?

Warthog, I am and administrator on my bb (http://farpointdir.hypermart.net/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&BypassCookie=true), and let me tell you, flame wars suck! If you don't stop a guy like sparkywrz, he and all his cronies will invade a good bb and force you to close it down for a couple days while you clean up posts, ban users, etc.

You hafta get em before there are a lot of em. One of the reasons I and a partner started our bb was for it to be a flame free zone... many trek bbs's are full of flamers!

The main reason I've STAYED with SYSOPT is the excellent moderation... Sysopt fortunately has enough members where they could initiate a one strike 'n' you're out policy.

Hmmm AOL does not seem to care about internet abuse with thier users.......anandtech moderators asked them for help in trying to track someone that was hacking into anands forum........they basically told the mod to *&%$ off........anyways,he may have been being really imature.....but was he actually causing harm?????? I do not think being immature and stupid constitutes internet abuse..............
Please do not think I am being a jerk,I was just thinking about the implyed statement,I do not know what he really did in the other posts.............this one seemed a bit immature...........

*cybersmack me if I am being obnoxious*

I come to SYS for information about all sorts of nitty little problems that no one else has answered so far. From what I have seen this is a good group of individuals who try to work together.
I registered a week ago or so but I have read posts for a couple of months.

Keeping a positive attitude, language straight and non offensive is very important. In this age of technology - discrimination on any basis is not nice nor fair!!
I wouldn't want my kids to not view this site because of this. Frustration is one thing! I too use choice words, but I hope that patience would allow me to describe the problem rather than ranting about it!
Thanks All - David fr Canada

Yes, it is possible (and can actually be more cost effective) and we will be working on a feature of it over the next few months. However, it certainly is harder than building a PC.

Oblivion: Is that why AnandTech was considering banning ALL of AOL??? I think that's a rather harsh decision espciallly for the millions of people who weren't involved.

I agree w/ 83rd Apostle, this bulletin board is great b/c of the professionalism of the Moderators. I know a guy who got permanently banned from Anandtech for posting 1 (mildly crude) humourous post. (OK OK it was ME!! http://thedam.com/cwm/smile/net/tongue.gif ) I can even recall a little friction we had w/ another BBS a while back and our Admin showed much better judgement than theirs in resolving it.

Round of applause for Sysopts Admin/Moderators! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Man I want to build my own laptop so bad. I have the same distaste for pre-made laptops as I do for desktop systems. Please someone show me a link! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

this may be a stupid question...ah never mind, I have this great idea for laptops, it might greatly increase their performance and I think no one else has done this, to the drawing board!!

sorry, thinking out loud http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I would love to build a laptop,if I could do it a good bit cheaper then retail............it would have to be at least 20% cheaper though.

OT
You got it......that is exactly why they may be banning all of AOL.........some *** was hacking alot of the senior members accounts, and posting under there names..............I was banned for a very brief time from there.........but once in a thread I called the MODs over there nazi like, and said they were quite rude and immature...........can you believe they did not ban me for that? I was just speaking my mind was all.......they were getting heavy on the banning among other things...........

Everything in a laptop is really close. There's very little room to move in it. So count your blessings and just get one that's all together.

I'd really like to build my own laptop too, so I can put whatever I want in it, and change whatever I need to in the future. Not to mention saving precious dollars. But realistically, if I were to do so, it would probably be the size of a briefcase, and weigh fifty pounds, HA! I can see it now, I'm dragging a briefcase, and a dolly with a generator on it.

Oh yeah, and as for the whole issue of "retarted" and what not being just a term or expression (other common ones inc. gay, fag, so on), someone told me to think of what I identify most strongly with, and what I would feel if people used that "term" to refer to things they thought were stupid, or to people they don't like. Changed my perspective on the matter.

Unless I am mistaken, Anand's only banned AOLers from posting, not viewing. It's not that bad, really. It should send a firm message to AOL that they need to clean up their act and take responsibility for their users actions and enforce their policies. As for sparkywrz, he was warned and it was more like 10 strikes and he was out.

It's obvious that this conversation has moved back to orginal topic but I would like to express my opionion on the ejection of Sparky.

I am currently the MIS tech with my company. I've been in this position for 6 months. The opportunity was presented to me because of my knowledge in the field. Most of my knowledge though, has been gleened from trial and error---not from a "formal education" background.

When I reach a point where I need assistance, I look to other techs, not text books for solutions. This bulletin board has very helpful to me in solving many problems. Someday I hope to have the answers to help others learn and develop their skills.

should this individual be banned from the board---YES this valuable tool for many---not a chat room to meet lonely people in.
