Brian Keith 12-21-1999, 09:58 AM I have been hearing rumers that both Intel and AMD plan to discontinue using Slot1/A and switch to Socket 8.. can anybody tell me for sure? Wiz 12-21-1999, 12:09 PM the p3 550E's are actually socket370, not sure why, cuz every coppermine above that is slot 1... Peter M 12-22-1999, 02:15 AM Well, with the L2 cache being pulled onto the processor itself, the slotted cartridge design is not needed anymore, and just adds cost to both the mainboard and processor. We saw that before on Celeron, Intel's "Coppermine" P-III doesn't need external L2 cache chips anymore, and AMD is slated to do the same with new K7 flavors codenamed Spitfire, Thunderbird, and Mustang, that also have the L2 cache in the processor. One might assume that both makers will continue putting those newer processors onto slot cartridges for a while, but that'll only be to support existing mainboards for a little while longer. No technical reason to do it, it's more expensive, so it's bound to leave. Regards, Peter Wiz 12-22-1999, 08:58 AM why do only the 550E's use the 370 and the rest dont then? that is what confuses me. AuraEdge 12-22-1999, 09:16 AM Whats the name for a FC-PGA Socket? ...like PPGA is to Socket 370 as FC-PGA is to...? Is that was Socket 8 is? [This message has been edited by AuraEdge (edited 12-22-1999).] dawgtuff 12-22-1999, 02:16 PM Went to Intel's site, and all I could find out was the FC(flip chip)/PGA will fit on a 370 mobo "only" if that mobo's bios will recognize the lower voltage requirement. If not,it will fry the cpu.Mobo's that support VRM 8.4 will work. Also, there's a 2 pin change on the FC that requires a "reset" protocal on the mobo bios, however, this isn't needed for the mobo/cpu to work(the cpu may not work to it's full capability, though).Intel didn't recommend any slotkeys, however,Iwill's slotkey II says it completely supports the FC/PGA format.....Why is this Intel's only FC/PGA?Don't know! I do know it's one fast, very OC'able cpu...700mhz...yeh! RobRich 12-25-1999, 02:24 AM The new standard would probably have to be called socket 9 if such a designation actually develops. The old pentium pro's have already claimed the socket 8 title. AMD has pretty much already labeled their new format Socket A (as in relation to Slot A). Maybe Intel will screw up and label theirs Socket 1 (brings back memories) in blind response. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif [This message has been edited by RobRich (edited 12-25-1999).] SysOpt.com
