Have just ordered myself a new mo/bo (abit bf6)as i have never fitted a mo/bo before, i need a bit of advice.
i notice from some of the post's that the first boot from the refit of new mo/bo, it is said that you should start in safe mode and go into the device manager, and remove everything? does this mean eveything? absolutely everything? my other quistion is a bit daft, but anyway this is it,my current mo/bo has video built in. does this mean i have to get a video card as well? if i do i was looking at the voodoo type, agp i presume.
but there is 2d and 3d? or something, can anyone recommend me one?
thanks.
p.s any tips on fitting new mo/bo would be greatly received.

Heres the deal with this stuff!
The BF6 must be in an ATX class case. Be sure that you have an ATX case and powersupply (the two go together.

Last time I replaced a board, I didnt remove any devices, but have since reformatted my C drive. I suppose it would be a good idea to rermove everything and allow windows to redetect everything by itself. It may also be a good idea to run the windows Setup again (reinstall windows).

yes you will need a new video card.
Older cards (most under 2mb) have only 2d capabitliy
The Voodoo Graphics (Voodoo1) and Voodoo 2 have 3d Only, so you cant use them as primary cards. Most any card newer than the Voodoo 2 has 2d and 3d.
I would recommend a Diamond V770 TNT2 32MB Video card for 93 dollars from www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com) . In te search box, look for V770 32MB to find it.

If you want to spend a bit less, You can get a Voodoo3 2000 16MB for 78 dollars. At pricewatch, search Voodoo3 2000 to find it.

These 2 cards are very powerful and allow stunning graphics and smoothness on just about any game, and have very good 2d preformance as well. If you play any games at all, I wouldnt recommend anything less.

If you dont do much gaming, you can get a Matrox G200, which has outstanding 2d quality, but has a pretty outdated 3d graphics core. Search pricewatch for G200 Millenium 8MB OEM to find it. ($49)

These are all AGP cards. While graphics cards can be found in PCI form, any board with a AGP slot should be complemented by an AGP card. Without going into technical specs, AGP is faster than PCI, and can only be used by Graphics cards (so why dont ya use it? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)

Just install the new mobo and let windows install all the drivers for it. If you search this bbs you will find tons of opions and great advice. after everything is running fine and all your drivers are installed reinstall windows. I had to because of all the duplicates I had in sys props. It cleaned it all up.

I would also recommend ground straps, so if something goes wrong, you can say "Yes I was grounded" Static problems are rare, but its one more thing to worry about if you have problems. Also, set your RAM stick before you install your board because sometimes they are really tight, so you want good backing support. Some people use washers between the board and the mounting screws. It is always a good practice to start clean with a fresh re-load because your system will never be faster!

I started my rig with video, mouse, keyboard & sound only, got them happy. Then I added the modem card, when it was happy I went to joystick, etc.

Happy building!!
