Burning in a CPU is to run it at as high a load as possible. This serves 2 purposes.

First off, if a CPU runs at full load, its really stable (Wouldnt settle for anything less!). This is especially important when testing if your overclock was sucessful. You may want to leave your comp on for a day or 2 at full load after a overclock to test if it is stable enough.

The second purpose is when you burn in a CPU, it may be able to clock higher or run at lower voltages than previously possible. (I cant really explain this, I think when you stress components they somehow become more 'used' to being stressed and therefore can be stressed more).

Such programs that use your CPU at full load are the distributed.net client (aka RC5), Prime95, and Seti@home. I have never used prime95, and I grew out of Seti@home. If you want to use your CPU for the sole purpose of burning in, I think Seti@home would best suit your needs since it is the easiest of the two that Ive used to set up. The url for RC5 and Seti@home are as follows -

www.distributed.net (http://www.distributed.net) for RC5
www.setiathome.com (http://www.setiathome.com) to link to Seti@home.

I run my computer 24/7 with RC5, and my CPU temp on my C366@550 is 38c. (for when you clock it, anywhere about 45-50c should be fine. I use a case fan and a FDP32 HSF.

If you have any more questions about the burn in programs, such as how to set them up, post in the distributed computing forum.

If you need any more tips with cooling or overclocking, post a new thread in the Overclocking and CPU's forum.
