I don't know if it is just the UK or is it everywhere. It is almost impossible to buy a DVD drive at the moment. I in particular want to be picky about which one i get and have one only in mind and it looks like i'm going to have to wait longer than the mnonth i have been waiting already.
Anyone have any clues as to what is causing the problems, and any ideas when it will all be sorted out.
Please cheer me up by saying that it will all be ok tomorrow though that might only work for a day if it is all still pear-shaped when tommorrow comes.
cheers
Rod

There is seemingly an international shortage...according to my local comp store there are three nokia phones and the PSX2 that use the rom chip a dvd uses so they are getting sold to sony and nokia for better profit. Two local stores have the fact that there is a shortage printed on thier pricelists and theyhave doubled in price and there is a three week waiting period.

There is some fear of the bottom falling out of DVD prices when the newer drives that will include DVD audio are released. How would like to be holding 20,000 units that will not play DVD audio?

I seem to remember hearing that DVD drives share a component with mobile phones, of which there is a global shortage (I think it's a particular type of RAM)

As mobile phones earn more money and demand more units, I guess they get priority http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I'll try to find exactly where I heard that...

[edit] Voila! Found it. Digital Signal Processors, not RAM, but I was close! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

there was a norwegian guy who cracked the code on the discs

Over here in Canada, they used to be $159...I was gonna buy it for my bro but was thinking it was gonna get lower. Unfornately, it is now over $220.

Went alternative and got him a used Sony 5x dvd for $75 bucks instead. Not too shabby. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
