I am looking for a 40gb+ hard disk.
It has to be either either ata66 or ultra wide scsi 2.
I am looking for a relativly cheap drive, but it needs to hit the following specs...
7200rpm
ata66 must have 2mb cache
any ideas?

Sorry, I don't know where you can get one individually but you can buy a 40gb 7200RPM hard drive with a Dell Dimension B Series computer. Doesn't help you much but at least you know that they're out there...

I also there is a 73gb drive shipping in deep blues...with enough brothers and sisters to make about 3 terabytes...

Largest ATA66 7200RPM drive is here:

1024 megabytes= 1 terrabyte

I know, useless info...

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40.
Fastest ata drive on the shelves. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I don't think there's anything bigger avalible just yet. You can always wait. The new 75GXP is going to use glass platters instead of aluminum. Apparently they can pack more data/platter in there because glass expands less with heat.
Press Release (http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/diskdrdl/desk/deskstar75gxp40gv.htm)
They're claiming it's going to be the first to break the sustained data transfer rate barrier of 33mb/s (37mb/s). It's funny, they just start taping the capabilities of ata66, and they move to ata100.
Anyway, should be a screamer. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Maxtor is coming out with a 60 gig HD, but it has a spindle speed of 5400.

I have one of the maxtor diamond max plus's, and it does indeed scream. I bought it to use for video capture on my marvel g400 and I have yet to see it hickup. You should be able to find it for a little less than $300.
Ahhhhh - the ability to loose soooo much data all at once when the drive finally crashes -
Use a RAID array, my son - and you'll thank me after you replace the first drive that crashes without losing any data.....
There are SCSI and IDE RAID solutions out there - take a look at promise technologies - they've got all sorts of goodies, and the logical drive is seen as one unit and access speed is actually faster than a 7500 RPM single drive for RAID solutions....
thing is, they don't come cheap - but the savings are in the back-up media you'll never need and the hours of lost time you'll never miss restoring from back-up....
KB...CompUSA just had a sale for 40G Maxtor 7200RPM drives w/2M cache for $249.00
I know 4 people who bought them.
It's over now, but they still have the drives.
Missing the point

I think IBM has a 70 gig 7200 rpb deal.....it has supposedly upped the bar on HDD technolgy........

Yeah Axel, but if you lose 2 drives in your array, you're toast. And even though I agree that 75 GB in one place is awful risky, it's a well known fact that IBM drives are indestructable. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
can you imagine defragging a 75gig drive, do it and then go on vacation for a week

You had better use Norton's Speeddisk or it will be a week!

IBM drives are certainly not indestructible. In the course of adding an additional 850M hard drive to a friend's P100 (total time about 10 minutes) the IBM 540 crashed HARD. I mean it rattled and everything. And I have no idea what happened.
What I do know is that a .44 magnum will make a drive look like very expensive swiss cheese...

Yet more useless information:
While strictly 1024Kb=1Mb or 1024Mb=1Gb, hard drive manufacturers have always liked to make their drives sound bigger than they really are and therefore established their own convention. They follow the rule: 1000Kb=1Mb, 1000Mb=1Gb and so on. Hence the discrepancy between the size marked by the manufacturer on a hard drive and the size reported by FDISK or Windows.
Re: IBM hard drives. They're great drives but at the risk of upsetting their loyal fans, I have to say that they are by no means "indestructable"! Unfortunately, they come back to our returns dept. on a fairly regular basis - not as often as some other makes but they certainly do come back. A surprising percentage of our 25Gb versions failed even straight out of the box. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

About the sizes:I have a 4 gig (it should be) Quantum,it is only 3.72.I had a 1.1 gig and was only 1073mb.It sucks!
BTW,It isn't the biggest,but the fastest,I'm talking about a scsi hd,don't know the brand.It is 20gb 10,000rpm,4mb cache and ATA66.

It probably isn't somekind of SH*T becaus it has got three year warranty. This is REALLY incredible. This is the price you normally pay for a 20gig,which is a lot slower!

I must say a was a little disappointed when I found out it was an April fools joke.Since it was already the 5th of April,so I didn't expect it to be a joke.
Ofcourse I already had doubts about it,it was so cheap. And when I watched that site again I wanted to push the 'add' button it moved and ofcourse I tried to 'shoot' the button,I did and found out it was an April fools joke.
I hate that nobody will fall for it anymore, but since it is already the 6th it doesn't matter (I guess)
