The easiest way to tell if you system has PCI slots is first they are usually light beige or white and roughly 3.35 inches long (84.88 millimeters) and .3675 inches wide (9.33 millimeters).

They feature two thin slots with little visible metal, unlike gleaming ISA slots, which by the way tend to be dark brown or black and longer than PCI slots.

The thin slot closest to the rear of the case is longer measuring roughly 2.495 inches long (63.27 millimeters) and the thin slot toward the front of the case is smaller measuring roughly .591 inches long (15.01 millimeters).

ISA slots would be the largest expansion slots in your case followed by PCI and then the smallest AGP (which is dark brown, has two thin slots, the shortest being toward the rear of the case and the longest being toward the front).

--------------------------------------------

PCI: Peripheral Component Interconnect

It’s a type of bus and controller system that among things allows the faster exchange of data with the CPU and other peripherals than the older ISA method.

It’s currently the preferred standard slotting method for adding expansion cards to your system.

---------------------------------------------

It’s much more complex than all of this and perhaps if you want to know more someone else with greater knowledge than I can help.

The answer to your question in a nutshell though: PCI = Expandability

I would like to extend a debt of gratitude to my Mitutoyo Digimatic for its assistance in measuring the PCI slot mentioned in this post.

thanks, my present old slow board which I want to replace has four long black slots ISA three ocupied and three PCI empty all have case slots behind them. most of the new boards I see listed don't have that many. I don't see an APG slot
