SysOpt

One of SysOpt's forum users has a program on to remove the upstream limit on cable modems. If anyone out there wants to test it I'd be interested in knowing if it works on different systems. But, if the user could post the app to a NORMAL LEGAL site that would be appreciated.

Scott

The file name is cmsuv10.exe.

Oh you have to click on warez to get the file. The name of the download from their site is "cable modem speed uncapper" you will have to deal with a few popup windows. I have not seen any adult content here either.

Thanks Jad. The file is up. I renamed it to cablemodem.exe. I don't have a cable modem, so I don't know if it works or not. Cable modems should be available here in May. I cant wait.

Question here, what is default limit on cable modem upstream? I'm "assuming" (hate that word, don't you?) that will increasespeeds when I'm uploading files to my site, etc.

Like more info on this if available.

Thanks

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I would love to use any program to speed up my cable since it seems to be slowing more and more. Can someone please Explain this to me first though, when you install it it brings up a box that has three options- Mac address of cablemodem, new gateway and own ip address.Am I supposed to change these settings or use the ones it is setting because own ip address is not the address I currently have, I just don't want to set it up wrong or i'll never get it back the way it was. Thanks http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

There is a readme file included, at least there should be, that will explain this. The way I found my Mac address was I disabled my firewall and went here and did the sheilds up test http://grc.com/default.htm
THen put in your IP and gateway.

ALso this only increases your upload speeds. to increase your download speeds go here http://www.speedguide.net/

I do have a question.
How much does it increase the upload speed? I have yet to use it yet so I am not sure. And does it work with all cable modems/providers?

nuclear
03-21-2000, 07:13 PM
well so far........it didnt work for me on my com21 modem with charter. but the people i had test it for me said it worked great for them using tetryan modems (something like that, im not sure if thats how you spell it). it allows the upstream to be as much as you can possibly sqeeze into the server but dont upload alot of stuff because you could get cuaght by your ISP if you over do it!

I am not sure it helped me as my upload speed was 125kbps and download speed was 1800kbps. This was with uploading and downloading a five MB file from geocities.
According to Net Medic my router is haveing problems right now so that may be the problem. I will also double check the Mac address and IP settings to be sure I got them right.

BTW I use @home

Will do.. Unfortunately I wasn't able to set it up in our San Francisco office. EarthWeb doesn't seem to understand that most the people here work in IT jobs by day and like to unwind with some quality gaming. Some of the execs think that gaming is for little kids I guess. Don't get me wrong, I believe in EarthWeb and the company's direction, but I do believe that this particular attitude could be different.

and guys another thing.......USE THE MAC ADDRESS FOR YOUR MODEM NOT YOUR ETHERNET CARD!!! that is the common mistake most of you are probably having is your using the mac address for your ethernet card. dont do that! look on the bottom of your cable modem and it should be there. it is a 12 digit string and it should be labeled as mac. i hope this helps you guys! and someone email me if they get it to work!!!

Thankyou for making that clear. I did not know there was a Mac address for the modem as well.
Nope just checked and there is no Mac address there? I have a serial #8 digit and a 9 digit PC: code, but no Mac address.

How could I find this? Maybe it is labled on the inside? My modem is descibed above.

I guess I am SOL cause on the @home paper I have a space for the Mac address but there is none. Any way to find this out?

look in the manuals BUT if all else fails......and your brave enough..........crack open the modem and look on the inside for it, it could be in there. if thats not the case, call your cable provider and ask them how to find it. or just ask the company that made it!

Went over and looked at your site and came out of there with a problem with my machine. Everytime a popup window comes up it loades your site several times in the popup. Is this one of those great features on WAREZ sites??? Help me out here. Well I see now it is not just the popup that does this whenever a new window open it happens I cant even look at the threads here at sysopt.
Second edit: Now any address I put in the address bar on my browser takes it to your site where it is overlayed 3 or 4 times I now cannot get to any site.

I have the same kind of Cable Modem as you jad1097, Motorola Cybersurfer. I called my ISP and they were either unwilling to give it to me or they actually don't know themselves the mac adress. In any case, going to my ISP for this information was useless. I see in your post "your willing to try just about anything". Well?????

Open yours up dude and let us know if you find the mac adress on the inside. Boldly go where no man has gone before. Good luck should you choose to take this mission. This post will now self destruct in 5 seconds. LOL http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Uh, why can't you just run IP Config to get the MAC address? Run this program:

C:\WINDOWS\WINIPCFG.EXE

The Adapter Address is the MAC address. At least to my understanding.

And it's a hardware, unchangable value. Every piece of hardware that has a MAC address (modems, NICs, etc.) has a unique address. And they never change.

I had a very good idea wich may not be practical. The RCA modems seem to be almost liek lancity though it doesnt work on them i ahev oen and the mac adress is stamped right on the back and almsot everoyne i knwo or have tlkaed to ahs the rca dcm 105 or rca dcm 205 is it a possibitity that cyou could write one for a rca series modem with is almost standard on @home systems?

jad1097
03-26-2000, 08:44 PM
I would not say that is the stardard for @home systems since many @home users also have the Motorola CyberSurfer Wave modem.

michael55123
03-26-2000, 09:21 PM
That true enough but most areas that @home is now giving access to the @home netwrok in are using rca's although about 30-40% are motorola

Dude no need to take apart it doesnt even work with the cybersuer yet just like lancity modems i do believe so dont even bother nuclear doesnt ahve time to wirhgt patches for them all so maybe if someone else could dis asseble it looka t the code and see whats going on maybe write on for a rca dcm 105-205 or a cybercefer or anything but nuclear doesnt ahve time he said he will write aspa but he goes to school to so why doesnt somsone else try?

This kid is a fake. This program was made by "DoDO_DeViL" who called it F**kUPC

jad1097
03-29-2000, 06:59 PM
I tied NEO trace with no luck in finding it out. If you have any ideas please let me know BBA, thanks.

The reason I took it apart was I wanted to know if the Mac Address was listed inside of it! I understand the program does not work with this modem but I am a curios person and I wanted to know. That is just how I am. I have fixed my own stereos, computers, tv's, amps etc.. Built computers for myself and friends. If I could wire PLC's, motor controls, relays, Main distrubution panels, Fire alarm sytems, bugular alarms etc.. What is the big deal. So I think taking apart a simple cable modem is no big deal.

How about an ADSL hack?

My provider is PacBell. They say upstream is limited to 128Kbps because of voltage restrictions, but my DSL modem is capable of 1.5Mbps up. I'm thinking maybe they're just being chinsy (They are the MASTERS of charging you for every little thing). IP addresses are dynamic (static IP costs extra, of course), so they can't be worried about users hosting web sites.

Supposedly, bandwidth settings are set by the DHCP server and linked to your NIC's MAC address. Also, accounts are linked to the MAC address, so changing it results in failed authentication.

Any Ideas?

lol, gullability at it's finest! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Anyway, I found it too... though the instructions were in German, and there was a webpage with a ton of screenshots (in the zip).

Like someone else in this thread, I'm on a Toshiba PCX1000 and although it has a 10mbps upstream rating and 30mbps downstream... i'll never come close to either. Based on a cable modem comparison at http://www.cabledatacomnews.com/cmpc/ . The Toshiba lagged far behind in uploads, which were very similar to mine. I get 30kb/sec max on uploads even to my ISP or someone else on MediaOne RoadRunner. Pretty lame. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
And my downstream isn't as high as some @home users. Max I've ever had sustained was 180kb/sec from a 30ping server with RedHat 6 ISO. Took me 1 hour for that 650 meg file. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

i have been able to hit over 300K/s sustained downlaods at the best with roadrunner and the toshiba modem, and the best upload i have hit was about 150K/s...but those instances are rare...usually i do between 20-80K/s up and in the 20-150K/s down...

FOLKS!!! DO NOT USE THIS PROGRAM!!!! It caused me MANY MANY headaches (and many @home people headaches!
Heres the deal, I was having computer problems..random lockups etc. I reinstalled my OS and some other software, then discoverd a bad stick of memory.
However, after reinstalling win98, I no longer could use my @home service on this machine! Wierd? yeah.
So, I bought a new harddrive (see the pc steals and deals and the staples deal), installed windows 2000 instead, used a 10/100 3com nic and thought all my worries were over. WRONG! I could ping myself, but not anywhere else, could not surf etc. However, I COULD see the internal network. I even flashed my bios and reset it with the jumpers! Somehow, this software screwed with something OUTSIDE of WINDOWS and not even on my cablemodem! Its the gateway thing that the program screws with.
now, something I also noticed when i was trying to remove this piece of software. In the registry under
hkey_current_user\software\vb and vba program settings\ there is an entry that lists the gateway, called ****UPC...dunno what it is, but its from that cable modem program and i don't like the sound of it myself.
Be warned. You will have problems. I have to keep using this program (w/o any special results) to keep my machine online.

Lame! I have been following this thread, I don't even have a cable modem, but we are supposed to get them in July. I am on a good ole 56k, which I use bonded to a 33.6 modem for a speed of 79k (thats as fast as they'll hook up).
I get about 6k downloads. Uploads even slower. After following this post, I think when I get my cable modem, i am gonna just enjoy the speed. It's gonna seem like race driving compared to my pedal car right now anyway! I am glad everyone is posting their results though.
