Do all AMD k-2 comps suck for gaming or just mine?

I just got a deal on a K6-2 500 computer that was way to good to pass up. It came with a SiS 8meg agp video card.Quake 3&2, Tribes,etc.would only work in software mode,very ugly.

I installed my extra V3 2000 pci card,expecting a big improvement,installed lastest drivers ,Wicked gl.Fired up Quake 3 ,ran time demo1. I got a measly 25fps(High Quality).My Celeron 333 gets 35fps with the Voodoo3.Systems are simalarily spec'd .

I have always heard that AMDk-6 2's don't do well with floating point calculations.But come on.My C500 gets 47fps in Quake3(high quality). I really thought this AMD 500 would be close & I thought Quake3 was optimized for 3D now.

I realize Q3 is not the only way to test video performance ,but I find it's a good benchmark.

I also ran 3dmark 99 The CPU bettered my Celeron, but the video came up way short again.

Can someone help me out here? Is this the best I can expect from this system?

I thought I read somewhere that there is a patch for the AMD's. that may not be installed on this system.

you should be gettin better frames than that in Q3 demo I get around 50+ with a K6-2-400 clocked to 517 but it could be the fact that I'm running my FSB at 115MHz ? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
but you shold be around 40 45 FSP with that set up

I get around 60fps in q3 at 1024 x 768 high quality.....that is with a celeron 550 at 605,and a geforce DDR with 128 megs of infineon ram..............the k6x is a dog when compared to a celeron in gaming.....


Scotter...............what kind of graphic card are you running ? A geforce DDR?
That seems like alot of FPS to get for a k6........that is unless you either have a geforce DDR,or you are running at low res........hell my same system got less then 40fps(about 35) with a g400 max installed.

Scotter- I think it is the fsb. at least party.

As for the fps on the k6-2, I had similar 3dmark2000 scores between my k6-2 400 at 450 as i did on my Cel 366. As i overclocked the Cel I got higher and higher above the k6-2. Sorry, I didn't keept he stats. The nly difference between the 2 systems was the new mobo and cpu.

That is the biggest reason you are getting poor gaming performance. the built-in AGP video is not very good when it comes to gaming. You would be better served by getting a pci video card such as a voodoo3 if you have the avaliable pci slot.

oblivion is right, K6-2 is pretty much a dog in gaming. It's really the only reason I still play Q2, 'cause anything more drains my machine. Oh well, one clutch-job and one more paycheck and I should have my Athlon up.

Man, doggy is right I just overclocked it to 560 & added another 64 meg stick & Q3 only went up to 27.5 fps(LoL).I should have clarified that was an 8 meg AGP (card,)Wiz.
I just find it hard to beleive that a Cel333 walked all over this chip. I was just hoping I had overlooked something in the bios,or driver wise, with this AMD. I wonder what Scotter is using for a video card to get near 50fps with his setup?
