...drive a Porsche Boxster if you ever get the chance http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. I had to take my car (http://qs3.pair.com/bmw/) into the dealer for warranty work (faulty Cam shaft sensor) and the dealer partners with a rent a car place in San Francisco that rents high end cars. They picked me up, drove me to the place, and said "that Altima over there is what we were going to put you in". But then I jokingly asked if he had a Porsche, he said yeah one was due in in 10 minutes, so I went for it.

I basically drove it about 230 miles around the bay area (Marin, Napa, Fremont, Palo Alto/Stanford, SF, etc.) in a 1.5 day period and loved it. It wasn't the Boxster S, but has PLENTY of power, and this one was cherry red - awesome looks, and manual OF COURSE. The engine sound in 1st revving to the redline reminds me of the scene in Ferris Buehler when he's picking up Sloan from school and rockets off in front of Mr. Rooney (different car, similar sound) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. Cool stuff:

http://qs3.pair.com/boxster1a.jpg (http://qs3.pair.com/boxster1.jpg)

I might consider buying one but it's not the kind of car that I would want to own exclusively I think. It would be ideal to own one along with an SUV, etc, but that takes lots of space to keep two cars.

Any Boxster owners here?

Scott

The Boxter S is 15% more expensive....but apparently the extra 48hp makes quite a difference.

Has everyone see this beauty already?
http://pages.hotbot.com/sf/seti/images/m3at.jpg

(nice, larger pic here (http://pages.hotbot.com/sf/seti/images/m3a.jpg))

It's '00 BMW M3. It has a 3.2L straight six putting out 343hp. That's more HP/L than the s2000.

Nice car if your not 6'4" tall. I try to test drive one about 2 years ago and hurt myself just trying to sit in it.

SysOpt

Seti: Yeah the new M3 is a sweet one for sure. I have a '00 323Ci now but it only has ~170hp. I've asked my salesperson at BMW-SF to let me know when they get the M3 in so I can test drive it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. Problem is, it's heavy. The Boxster weighs less and thus feels more nimble/responsive.

Dan: Definitely so. The seat doesn't adjust too much. Those over 6' would likely be cramped.

I will not go into what BMW has done in the past! I will say it is odd how many people do buy them that know their history. I will just say it involes WW2!

SysOpt

So people and companies can't change? I highly doubt that BMW is currently being run by the same decision makers as those in 1942-45. Bottom line is that they are great cars.

seti
03-16-2000, 12:14 AM
Well they M3 and boxter are in different classes for sure. Ha, try compareing a boxter s to a z8, well...that's not fair, the z8 cost more than 2 boxters. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

As for BMW and WW2;

I have an 89 535i and a mitsubishi 17" monitor......haha, am I supporting the oppositions war effort??? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Company's are made up of people who make choices, and people come and go. Just because it carries the same name doesn't assosiate BMW with the choices made in the past under that same name.

I love beamers....they're simple held to high QA standards and you can feel it.

Haven't had a chance to drive a fine German vehicle like that.My interests are in two wheels(one sometimes http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif canna you say..wheelie? ) That's why there are two fine Italians living in my garage now. One 95 Ducati 916SP (120 Hp at the rear wheel, see above statement..)
and one 96 900ss. Yeah, they are finicky but I wouldn't give them up for anything. One of my life goals achieved. Working on a viper next... cops love to see me coming..

Sweeeeeet Desmocat! My dad owned a 900ss, what a lovely bike, too bad he sold it. He was looking at 996's awhile ago....but it's a big commitment for a new one....a lot of cars cost less.

We found a '89(i think) Doug Polin replica 851 sp3 (bored to 888) in St. Louis. It had been in a museum and had 0 miles on it...the odometer actully read "0". They were asking $22,000 for it. My dad almost cracked on that one...but that's not a bike you want to ride, you'd feel guilty putting miles on it. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif And a new 996 is like 5g's less.

A 748R is the bike for me....mmmmm.

I havn't seen the price for the new M3 yet....I'm guessing $45,000-$50,000. I hope it doesn't go farther than the 16 grand jump the M5 makes over the 540i.

Stan, I hear you...dream car. Well, the Ferrari 360 spider (pic (http://members.home.net/cam-t/art/f360s.jpg))....but an m3 is much more realistic. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I hope they retain the handeling of the old M3...as it's known as one of the best stock cars for that in the world. It's also conciderd by many to have the best "feel". I'm glad they're not bringing an north american version over here.

AHHH, I could ramble on and on!!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I rather enjoy weekend drives in my Alfa Romeo Spider.
I'm stil restoring small portions of it.
I had wanted a Saab convertible, but found an awesome deal on the Alfa, 1983 44k orignal miles. The owners had it garaged for the last 8 years and only put 2k miles on it.
Needless to say I was sold on the spot.
It'll go nicely in the garage of my new house. Next project new top.

A friend gave me a ride in a Porsche 911 Turbo, I ended up in that small back seat (not safe!!) and I was glued to the seat due to the serious acceleration!!

I testdrove a '96 corvette (shiny red convertible) down the highway @ over 125mph but only for a few seconds, (u can't go that fast for long in traffic, it wouldn't be smart!).

Another friend of mine is dating this girl who's father testdrives vehicles for a living. What he does is gets 2 different cars every 2 weeks from his company, 1 car is a lowend car, the other a high-performance (what a cool job!).
This week he had a '00 Honda Accord, and the new Viper RT/10. The man was nice enough 2 give my friend a ride in the...u guessed it, Viper RT/10. All I heard was that was the ride of his life!

My Dad owns an '87 BMW 325i white convertible, I always love driving that baby.

The S2000 is certainly a good value but has far less torque than the Boxster or Boxster S and isn't as stylish (IMO, although it does look good), for starters. The Boxsters produce their peak HP at a much lower RPM, too. Consider the BMW M Roadster also.

Some stats
----------

S2000:
http://qs3.pair.com/s2000.jpg
HP -- 240hp@8300rpm
Torque -- 153 ft-lbs@7500rpm
0-60 -- 6.1s

MSRP -- $32,000

Boxster:

HP -- 217hp@6500rpm
Torque -- 192 ft-lbs@4500rpm
0-60 -- 6.5s
Weight -- 2778lbs
MSRP -- $41,430

Boxster S:
HP -- 250hp@6250rpm
Torque -- 225 ft-lbs@4500rpm
0-60 -- 5.9s
Weight -- 2855lbs
MSRP -- $49,930

M Roadster:

HP -- 240hp@6000rpm
