Hi Sweet~

#1. There are no stupid, idiotic questions.

#2. ZoneAlarm (free) http://www.zonealarm.com/

and/or

BlackICE Defender (>$40.00) www.networkice.com (http://www.networkice.com)

If you have any questions about these two, plenty of people here are running these programs (myself included) and will be happy to help you. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

There are many firewalls available. ZoneAlarm is a good personal one, checik it out at http://www.zonelabs.com.

Also check out http://www.grc.com for some other recommendations and more information about securing your machine.

I currently use ZA, and definitely like. I also run Conseal, as I like the feature set is offers. It can be slightly more technical to setup and use, but it's protection is extremely reliable (atleast for me). With ZA running behind Conseal, I have had zero sucessful attempts at breaking my computer. I've had many attempts, but none have actualy worked.

Also, I like running a firewall as it does more than block intruders. It allows you to filter the network packets. With my current config, I can filter the trash out of my connection, such as ip scans, ad severs, ident. scans, etc. Most people do not realize how much garbage info is actually passed along in the background. I've gained another 10-15% bandwidth just by using a firewall setup.

The newest ZA 2.1 beta can be found here:

http://www.zonelabs.com/beta_download.htm

You can also get a shareware trial of Conseal at:

http://www.signal9.com/demos/firewall/index.html

I like both, and I feel the retail version of Conseal is definitely worth the money. I also like BlackICE, but I don't beleive it's features offer me the best security with the least annoyance in my particular situation. It is a good desktop product for most end-users, but I like the ability in Conseal to completely control everything network related.

I like ZA, and the price can't be beat http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
It has stopped a few programs from sending something out of my computer, and lots from getting in. A bit touchy at times but overall a good firewall. I've used Conseal PD but it seems to use a lot of cpu resource. I use ZA 2.026 on 2 boxes and AtGuard 3.22.09 on my other. Atguard can take a long time to set up the way you want it but once there it works good. I have a link for Atguard 3.22 which is where I got it, and I didn't even realize it was free, I thought it was a demo http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif
I did get ZA 2.1 but started getting BSOD's so went back to 2.026 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Do check out grc.com on your newsreader.
Once you start with security, it's never ending but also very intersting.

I you do not mind paying for a good program, try jammer . You can get it at www.download.com (http://www.download.com) or www.tucows.com (http://www.tucows.com) . When you get an intruder, the neat little eye in your sys tray blinks, and you can email the report straight off to your ISP's abuse department (or whomoever you chose).

both Zone Alarm and Black Ice are great.... I would suggest running both of them they each have features the other does not.

and in my opinion the only stupid (etc) question there can ever be is one that is not asked, that is my opinion anyways.
