Sparkywrz, I gotta know: is the Compuserve you're using part of a computer rebate/discount deal? Unrelated on its face, but I'm curious.

Thx.

I tried using the trial version once here, and I got connected at the blindingly fast speed of 9,600... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I dislike my CS account mainly because of the huge toolbar on the top of the screen. However, I will usually connect @ 48000 or higher. My CS account is a part of a Compaq rebate program.

~edit And I hate losing the connection occationally.

Why not try one of the free services? I use Freewwweb and Freeinet.

JP:

I'm thinking about signing up a friend on Freeinet, I also have a disk that a local cmpany uses to access the net for $0, the only catch is that u have to view advertisements...correct?? I'd like him to be able to use e-mail, net, ftp, etc.

btw, I was on Compuserve from September to December 31, 1999--> I had tried one of there free trials, after about a couple of weeks I reported some serious problems w/there software to a Compuserve Rep., he said to make up for it he'd give me credit 'till the end of the year (dec, 31, 99), I made sure of this by calling back and making sure I have free credit...it checked out OK. well when I discontinued service w/them in Janury, I was mailed an invoice stating that I had deliberately avoided payment for almost 4months, and reprocussions would take place If I didn't pay!!!! They stated that i owed $397 !! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif!!

Since I have a close relative whos a Bill Collector, she cleared that up for me, but jeez what a bunch of liars!! I signed up with Earthlink, and I've been happy ever since http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

beware the wrath of Compuserve, and those cheap $400 rebates!!!

Yeah i've heard about Earthlink being pretty good. Yeah those ugly rebates that CS gives out just slows down there network. People get the rebates thinking"oh yeah instant credit" but when they get online they are connecting at slow speeds, or as some of you put it "fast" http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif, and getting kicked off, and just having so much trouble. The more people get those rebates the slower the CS network is going to get and that's why i skipped that step in buying a new computer because it's just common sence that so many people are getting the rebate so the network is going to be sorry and "fast" http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Unfortunatly what alot of people dont think about is: At the rate of $21.95 per month for 36 months you just paid Compuserv or whoever $790.20 to get a $400.00 rebate...Thats a pretty good investment on the ISP's part http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

People should just do a bit of math before they buy http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

A link to the free ISPs.

Worldspy works pretty well in my town.

And look at the penalty for early cancellation. In most of the rebate offers, you must return the entire rebate plus a $50 termination penalty.

Mntsnow, the day they came out with that rebate ****, I figured that out, I couldn't believe that most of the people didn't think that the ISP's were getting over $300 profit, my Dad and his wife got an E-machine through one of those rebate deals, after I had tried convincing him not to because of the loss u end up with, but he didn't believe me! Last time he makes that mistake, he ended up taking it back, and buying a computer @ DELL, He took me along with him so he wouldnt get jipped by yet another sales person! Now he's surfin the net on a reasonable Dell L500c!

Mntsnow, I agree 100%. (although I am paying $21.95/month for 36 months) My excuse is to be rid of credit cards. In the long run, with my terrible money skills, perhaps with CC interest I actualy would be paying more. At least that's what I telll myself. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

For the most part I agree w/ you Jad. But I heard a case of a FreeComputer type companies that doled out computers w/ a contract attached. Well the company went bankrupt and everyone who got a computer just kept it. Sh*tty computer but, hey, totally free!
