Here is a problem I posted several days ago in the tech help section but from the looks of the posts in this group I think I may get some better answers here.....

SPECS:

AMD K6 III 450
Soyo 5ema+ mobo
TNT 2 Ultra 32meg agp video card
128 Meg ram

Argon Technologies T786 17" monitor

My computer is a homebuilt. I assembled it in August and have been pretty happy with it.

Then my monitor started to act up.
When I first started using the monitor it worked great. I would turn it on and the pic would come right up. As time progressed it would take longer and longer for the picture to come up. It would also crackle and pop alot until the picture finally came up. Once the pic came up it was blurry but eventually looked O.K. It worked like this (but poorly) for about a week and then it would occasionally fade to black on me. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I sent it back and got a refurbished on as a replacement from Argon. This one worked great for about 2 weeks.

Then it went out in exactally the same way the other one did.

After the first one went out, I thought it was my video card doing it so I got that replaced before the second monitor so it probabaly isn't that.

I have called mobo manuf. and my case manuf. and they say that it is VERY unlikely that a mobo or power supply on the case could be causing this problem.

But what else does this leave??? I have narrowed it down to some possiblties:

1) Both monitors were defective and my system is fine. This seems very unlikely to me however and I hate to plug my new monitor into my computer and hope it won't go bad too.

2) Monitor powersupply from wall is bad. This may be a problem. I live in a dormitory and the power supply could be pretty dirty. I also had the the monitor plugged into a power strip with the following other things plugged into it: A halagon lamp, by cpu, a lamp, some small speakers, a 30" (about) TV and a Vcr, and a printer. This was all in a heavy powerstrip plugged into one socket. The tech guy from Argon said that a odd power supply would be unlikely to cause the problem because the monitor is designed to work at a wide range of voltages (for both uk and us power supplys)

3) Magnetic feild from TV. I had my monitor on my desktop and the back of it was only several inches from the back side of my TV. Its a big one and its about 10 yrs old. I don't see how this could really cause a problem though.....but maybe it could.

4) My mobo is somehow sending a juiced up signal through my video card and it is frying my monitor. I constaly checked my refresh rate since I got the new monitor but it was always within the specified range of my mon. The mobo manuf said this was very unlikely because if I had such a problem my computer wouldn't work at all. Since everything else seems to be ok, I suspect that the problem is on the monitor side of things.

5) my power supply from my case is bad. This also is unlikely because, once again, my whole computer would prob be f*&%ed up.

I am expecting my third new monitor from Argon on Tuesday so my time is short. My mobo manufacturer has also aggreed to send me a new mobo. I know that if i don't find out what was wrong, by the time I know my new monitor will be toast.

My father is of the opinon that I just got two bad monitors. He used to work QC in a Nuclear plant and he said alot of times when they get one failure, the would check all the parts because they usually had a manufacturing defect. I hate to chance it though.

I intend to plug the monitor into it's own socket and put my monitor on the other side of the desk away from the TV. I will get a voltage tester and test both my wall socket and the power from my power supply and the power strip. Any other suggestions?? Please help. I don't want to have to call Argon again and beg for a new monitor.

If anybody has every tested the voltage of a powersupply or video card output and knows how to do it let me know.

Anyway, thanks for listening. I look forward to some intelligent thoughtful replys.

ALso the same people that post in this forum post in the others also. You had it in the right forum before. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum2/HTML/006066.html the answers there were fine , I thought so anyway.
