I have an Amptron 9600 B mobo. It supports a K6-2 300, 333, or 366 w/ a BIOS upgrade, but not a 350. Tech support said it won't run because the 350 has a 100 mHz bus speed. Others tell me it will, but no luck so far. Isn't there a clever solution to this problem?

Sure it will!! Get the 350 and set your system just like it's a 366. Sure its a little higher than the rating but should not present a problem if you have any sort of decent fan/hs combo. You're going to miss out on all the performance gains of a 100MHZ bus though.

Shane,

I too have a "old" amptron 9600 mobo sitting in my closet now. as the Amptron techs told you the 350 K6-2 chip is a 100mhz chip. You can run it at a lower FSB but why? you would be giving up performance....If you already have a 350 chip but dont want to buy a new board that supports 100mhz then run it at the lower FSB or get the 300 or 333 (66mhz) chips (listed as "AFR-66" on the face of the chips) as they are supported by your board..or try it at the 366 settings (should work fine http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif )

Good luck

Mntsnow

ps..I now run my K6-2 350 on a Epox MVP3G-M mobo @ 448 (4x112 @2.4volts)

Hi people!

A good match for a 83 MHz capable board, like the PM9600, are the 333 and 380 MHz processors, run at 83 MHz 4.0x (333 MHz) or 4.5x (375 MHz) respectively.

With the 333 MHz K6-2 becoming increasingly unavailable, the trick is to use a 350 instead and run it slower. As long as you don't exceed a given processor's core and bus frequencies, all is fine (like when using a 350/100 at 333/83). You should not use a 333/66 at 333/83, it might not work at all. The more usual 333/95 will be OK, and so will a 380/95 at 375/83.

btw, the latest BIOS for the PM9600 is at ftp.pcchips.com.tw/BIOS.

Peter Missel,

You say "As long as you don't exceed a given processor's core and bus frequencies",

My question is why does my K6-2/333(66) run only at both 66 and 100 mhz bus. I have it clocked at 100x3.5 instead of 66x5 and it runs better. Only thing is that now when I put back the 66 bus on it doesn't seem to run right. Maybe I'm use to the higher speed it at now.

What do you think about this.

Thanks for the help guys. Sure enough it's compatible with a K6-2 350. I got it running (underclocked 300 mHz) and installed Win95, but the sorry piece o' **** board went out with a puff of smoke the next day. I'll buy an FIC mobo next time.
