Has anyone used a program to test the connection speed of their modem, what is it
and how reliable is it. I have tried this
one. http://www.speedguide.net/Windows/win_perform.htm
I am uncertain how reliable it is?

a few questions - does the software give a measure of resends? - you may be going at 52K, but if they are all resends of corrupted packets, then you might be doing only 9.6K -

Also - have you checked your modem default settings as well as the connection speed set in your dial-up networking connectoid properties? Sometimes an ISP will limit your access by default setting the dial-up connection settings at 33.6 or, in some rare cases, 28.8.... most people don't know to go look here and jack it up to improve their connection settings.

Just a few thoughts....

Axel,
I have set the connection speed at 56K.
Here is the problem I am chasing. I have two phone lines, the original line connects at
approx. 40k and the new line connects at 23K according to this program. I asked a friend to try this progarm and it came back at 43K on a 56K line. There is some loss which is expected and explained on the web site that I recently found.
I have contacted the phone company regarding noise on the line, they say there is none. On all other calls all I get are excuses and tries at selling me an ISDN line. I have tried to get the phone company to route it through another switch but they ingnored my
request???????????????????

Mad1,

I don't know where abouts in the world you are, or if they could do a similar thing to your line:

A friend of mine was having trouble with poor connections and connections just bombing out - he spoke to the telecom folk (British Telecom) and they increased the gain on his line. This seemed to improve things.

It's worth asking the fone company if it's possible to turn up the gain 'cos you're having problems.

Krusty.

Call the repair line of the phone company and ask to speak to a supervisor. Make sure you get his/her name. Explain the problem to them. If you still have trouble call and ask to speak to the 2nd level supervisor. You will get it fixed if you keep calling and going up the ladder.

I fixed the problem, cancelled the line.
I was tired of hearing excuses and sales lines for ISDSN or other options they wanted to push.I guess I will wait for DSL.

Thanks
