Howzit,

I was just looking around here and noticed all the threads with people asking Where can I find this and where can I find that.. I'm to lazy to look for it please tell me where to find it...

Ever try one of these ? www.dogpile.com (http://www.dogpile.com) www.google.com (http://www.google.com)

Get out there and learn for yourself people, I'm all for helping. That's why we are here. People just seem so lazy.....

Nuff said.

Peace

This message was edited because I made an ignorant statement regarding AOL and it was uncalled for..

Yeah, it would be good if people would do a bit more research first. But, looking at it in a positive way, many questions are common ones, so to have the answers to those questions here is good. Now if we can just get people to use this message board's search function to search through past messages/questions that have been answered, we'd be getting somewhere http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif. Eventually, every question that could be asked will probably have been answered a dozen times http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif.

Well, while alot of the posts I answer are after I do a search for that topic with Google, I am more than happy to try to help anyone out. I don't know if it is laziness more than they trust that Sysopt can find their answers. I like that and it keeps people coming here and the conversation flowing. I don't really hold any hard feelings towards anyone or any question (unless it refers to 5 finger discounts like one here has recently).

One good thing about Sysopt is that the people answering don't flame others no matter how easy or newbie the question is. Makes for a good community.
Just my $.02

---I also agree that some questions are repeatedly asked. I guess one good thing is that we can stay on top of new developments in a certain subject if they are asked frequently. Often there are new developments that slip by and are brought out by these question. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Hold on, I'm probably the least computer literate member with as many posts and I am sure that lots of folks DON'T know how to go to MS or other sites to look for help. It doesn't bother me to go and hunt answers for nice people. You gotta admit that hunting around at Macro-swamp can be tiring sometimes at best. You get the indicators of ones ability from the verbage,(words) used in the requests. just my $0.02 DrVette

I tend to agree with you Richard, some times when you do a search even with Dogpile and others you can end up with so much info that is not related, that a person can get lost, when you ask in Sysopt more often than not some one has already solved the problem and is more than happy to post a link, also we have a lot of members tat are maybe new to the game, after all Sysopt is branded around many sites as a well respected info and help site, so many new comers to computers will visit our family here, and helping family is never to much trouble, it's what makes this site.
Just my 2 cents worth

On a related note:
Is it just me or... Lately, every time I try to search out answers to a problem the first 20~30 listings to come up are questions posted on support sites..?

How do you more accomplished searchers get around this?

TIA,
Al

I see it like this:

Let's say I'm with some friends in a city I'm not very familiar with. I get hungry. I guess Tex would have me just go and find some place to eat. Or if I had trouble I should look in a phone book...

where-as I, would just ask the locals, hey where's the best place to eat around here? Ok, sounds good, how do I get there?

I dunno, personally I don't mind answering the same questions for various users. We've all been there at least once.

The difference between a search engine and a forum post is quite evident:

If you go with the search site, then you may get a ton links that might have information that might not even be related to what your looking for. Even if you find something close, then it might provide some uninformed solution or response from complete unqualified idiots. Just beacase it's in the top 10 matches, it does mean it's a valid source.

With a forum, one can ask a question, and commonly receive a concise answer that will directly adress the problem before them. That way, the one posting the question feels that the answer is directly correlated to their situation, and thus a more inter-personal atmosphere of trust and repect is developed. Sysopt.com, THE COOLEST FORUM ON THE NET, offers the members an enviroment where they can get valid answers from people who usually know just what their talking about.

Edited just for my man OutPatient!! And I'll agree, there is no forum quite like this one. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Sorry about that, I just couldn't resist.

I've got to agree - Sysopt.com is the best. Although I've been actively posting on topics I know about or need help with, I'm learning quite a bit just from reading a lot of other threads. You guys/gals are the best!

Steve

PS congrats on the new position Mtnsnow! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

My first post here probably seemed like a kinda silly question, but I honestly couldn't find an answer for it. The first response I got, Socalgal solved my problem.

I agree with you, howste, I'm learning as much just reading other posts here as I ever have seraching for info. In the future I'll be giving dogpile and google a try though <g>

I have no problems answering any question that I have an answer for, even if it's been asked before (although if the previous post was the same question I might just type out "See previous post..." )

I've been coming here 7 months and I just learned to use the search last week. You can teach an old dinosaur new tricks http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif eh!
I think for newbies it can be overwhelming as to the info out there, I know I used to get so frustrated and log off, myself if I've had that experience and know the fix I'll answer, no matter how simple or stupid sounding it is,

I use THE WEB FERRET (http://www.ferretsoft.com) because I am too lazy to post and wait an hour for someone to give me a link. 98% of the time I can find what I am looking for in less than 5 mins.

Or directly download it from here. (http://208.234.1.71/Downloads/webferret.exe)It is only 711Kb.

I dont mind searching for an answer for someone while I am at work sitting staring at a computer monitor doing nothing. When I am busy at work I look at the posts. When it is dead, nothing to do so I try and help out the people here as much as I can. Hopefully people who I have responded to have found some use for the info that I either know off the top of my head..... or I have searched for while at work being bored to death.

I love this place beacuse of some of the great ideas some people come up with

Thx
