I just replaced a friends 20.5 gig quantum H.D in their gateway last night because they said it was making a "grinding noise". When I got there and turned it on, It sounded a little louder than my maxtor when accessing the drive, but really not out of the ordinary. I went ahead and replaced it with the IBM that Gateway sent to them.I told them I didn't think anything was wrong with the drive myself, but wanted to ask here if anybody knows if the quantums are "noisy by nature".
They said it was like that from new, and they have had the computer since December of 99. I also thought it was out of the ordinary for gateway to send them a new drive to put in instead of telling them to take it to the store, which is about 20 miles away.Has anyone had a simular situation? It's pretty cool that Gateway is willing to let you work on your own system. And by the way, I did ask if they said it was cool, because I sure didn't want to void their warranty by swapping out the drives without Gateways OK.

Can't say that I've seen any noisy Quantum drives. Or IBM drives for that matter. Both brands are virtually silent IMO. I've got an IBM 22GXP and the only sound it makes is a high-pitched whine on startup when it revs up to 7200RPMs.
Perhaps when your friend said that their "hard drive" was making a grinding noise, they were mistakenly referring to the whole tower in general (most non-literate people do). This might mean that a CPU fan or case fan needs to be oiled or replaced, in which case you've just scored a new 20.5 GB drive for FREE http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif.

Yeah,I first thought it would be a power supply fan or something like that, but it was the drive making the noise when it was reading from it on startup and stuff. I also told them I would be more than happy to take that "bad noisy drive" off their hands, but Gateway wanted it back. ****... 20 gigs for free, woulda been nice, huh? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I would have to say that Quantum HD's are noisier than the average drive. My first one was a 2.0G Fireball, and man...when that one was spinning, it sounded like it was going to fry itself or explode! That clicking noise was what the HD made when it was accessing or writing. My 10.2 EX sounds the same. It was unusual at first, but now I'm used to it.

Well since I am a hardcore Kawasaki fan, I guess you can take this for what it's worth then, huh Desmo? hehehehehe http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
I have a Quantum 6.4 7200 rpm. It's noisey. The sound reminds me of a scsi.
I put the same drive in a friends computer that I built for him this past week. It sounded the same.
I'm just partial to Quantum.

I hear a lot of good things about Quantums and almost nothing bad. I agree w/ Navy, they are louder than average, but hey, if it does its job well I don't much care what it sounds like.
Shoot I'd tolerate a hard drive that sounded like motorcycle if it was a 20000 RPM, 2 ms access drive!
