First about the Ram. If you have the proper type of ram the motherboard uses, installing the extra memory modules should be easy. After adding the modules and botting the computer, the Bios will come back with an error. You then go into the Bios program and choose to save and exit -that's all. Upon the restart, the Bios will correctly identify the memory count.

If there is no operating system installed, just insert the video-card into the proper slot.

If there is an OS installed, change the device to MS Standard VGA within the OS's Display Properties. Shut down the system and remove the old card and install the new one. When the system restarts, it will be in the standard VGA resolution. Install the drivers that came with the card. Reboot. Select the desired color depth and screen resolution.

I'm a relative "newbie" in regards to hardware of any sort, but lately I've been trying to "become schooled" on some of the basics. With this in view, I decided to try some seemingly "simple" upgrades to a computer that my mother has. It has an Acer
V12P motherboard and the BIOS is a V6.

I'd like to install a cheap Video Card and extend the RAM from 8MB to 20 or 40MB, so my questions are:
1)Will BIOS V6 automatically configure if I
"pop-in" these new items?
2)If not, how do I change the BIOS settings?
(BIOS are a fuzzy thing for me at this point)

Thanks for your help.

Thank you for your reply Bleeding Edge, as I said I'm still a "newbie" at the hardware end - so forgive some additional stupid questions:

1)How do I get into the BIOS? Is it CNTL-ALT-ESC? Or perhaps will it instantly go into the BIOS when the BIOS error occurs?

2)Once inside the BIOS, will it have a simple selection of memory like 24MB, etc or will it require me to subtract the memory used for other system things?

3)I've called some places about the Acer V12P boards and RAM memory and I'm asked if
it's EDO or Parity. To be honest, I have no clue which it is - and the person at the store said the motherboard would not have that information on it. I know it has 4 expansion slots that are empty - with the resident 8MB being held in two slots, which make me think that the memory will have to go in pairs.

Thanks again for your earlier response.
