As a few other membersare in the same boat as myself ie: changing careers could those in the industry share their job descriptions and base requirements to go for those jobs.(I know experience is also key) I plan to take a govmt sponsored retraining course this summer through a private college (similar to CDI) I'm leaning towards web end of things but can always change my mind prior to starting the Course. Thanks in advance.

I do freelance private consulting. I build some computers, replace parts, add peripherals, install software, some troubleshooting, and things like that. My main personal requirements before I started handing out business cards were to go 6 months without needing any help with any problems i did try to fix, and being succesful. I also invested a little bit of money in a couple little diagnostic tools, and a few things like a known good video card and sound card, and a UPS for working on others' computers to avoid damage. It's not dificult work, and the money though sparse (so far, but I'm still just starting) is not too bad for the amount of work. I mostly help out the computer-inept people in my area, mostly 40+ years old and/or too frigtened to actually crack their system open. So far in about 4 months I've only had one problem, and that was a system I built had a continual beeping from the sound card. I updated the drivers and problem solved.

Morpheus1964, i too am in the same boat as you. i recently discovered something amazing in my area. i found out that about 90% of the people around me were dialing the same # to access the internet, although they had different isp's. a little investigating at internics site and i soon came up with the 800 number for whoever it was that we were dialing into. anyhoo to make a long story short, i am now setup to resell accounts the same way all the other service providers do in my area...markup is close to 100%! it works out great when doing service on a customers computer and you hear them complain about their isp. doing all of this has probably doubled the amount of upgrades and repairs i do. i dont know if its available to do in your area but may be worth taking a look.
