Tom Waits is an amazing artist,he is completly original, and a visionary of sorts...he plays many many instruments, and writes all of his music and songs.....

A couple of qoutes....
"Sometimes when you finish, you take the clothes and you put them in a pile, and you burn them. You make a fire of all your clothes. Sometimes to be a leader you must be a child, you must be a stinking idiot... You know what I mean? The courage of a child to say, "I smell nothing," and to go into it with eyes open."

"I don't know about the Internet. I'm not on that. I'm way behind. I have a rotary phone. Progress is compulsive and obsessive, I guess. I get the feeling that people aren't leaving their homes. They are sitting in front of their computer desks and everything comes to them from their screens. That's what the whole nation really wants, but anything that is that popular or easily accessible is usually not good for you. It's like tap water is not good for you; it's recycled **** and chemicals, that's all. There is a reason that a bottle of water costs more than a gallon of gas. And what's the biggest enemy of computers? Water. And the computers are trying to eliminate all the water. I don't know where I'm going with this. I guess we're in the middle of a revolution and nobody knows where the rocks are going to fall."

Tom Waits may be obscure, but he's not unheard of. Another person in that category is Tom Lehrer.

"Be prpared, that's the Boy Scouts' marching song,
Be prepared, as through life you march along,
Be prepared to hold your liquor pretty well,
Don't write naughty words on walls if you can't spell,
Be prepared, to hide that pack of cigarettes,
Don't make book, if you cannot cover bets,
Keep those reefers hidden where you're sure
That they will not be found,
And be careful not to smoke them
When the Scoutmaster's around,
For he only will insist that they be shared,
Be Prepared!"

True,I meant to say obscure in the title.....most people have never heard of him though.....that is what I was shooting for.

How about Roy Buchannon? Anyone ever hear of him? Probably one of the world's top 3 best guitarists of all time! Played everything from blues, to rock, to country and everything in between.

The rolling stones asked him to join them after brian jones died, but he turned them down. Can you imagine that, turning down the rolling stones for a job! HA!

Anyway, if you like guitars, look up this guy's music. He must be obscure, because I can't even find him on Napster... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I'll look and see if I can find a picture of him and post it later.

hehe I've heard of Captain Beefheart, but never actually heard them.

5 points each if you've heard of

Laibach (Slovenia weirdoes)
Front 242 (Belgian weirdos)
Borghesia (more ex-Yugoslavian weirdos)
Jim Mullen (perhaps the finest British jazz guitarist - I saw this guy live in a pub gig and he blew me away)

grandslammer,

The lead singer for the Babies was John Wait or Waits, I think.

Ah, okay, that may well be true. But, I did like the babies, at least the three or four songs ZI listed above.

By the way, any one know of Roy Buchannon?

I've heard of the ALL, and listened to Roy Buchanon, Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart (i DID find him on napster, but i've got some vinyl, too), Tom Lehrer, Front 242, Borghesia, and Jim Mullen. sorry to say I do not know of Laibach, but I may have to change that.

*Major Audiophile*

Anyone heard of Skunk Anansie or the Pietasters? Pretty obscure on those two fronts...

If you like Tom Waits, you'll like Chuck E. Weiss.

Tom joins in on vocals and plays guitar on Chuck's EXTREMELY COOL cd. Perhaps you heard it already...perhaps not.

....I was thinking about starting a thread in the 'user-to-user' section to trade fully recorded CD-Rs with properly tagged high quality Mp3s for the same. A one-on-one trade.

I have over a thousand. The lousy songs/recordings have all been thrown out.

Anyhow, if you guys have any interest, how about we start by trading amongst ourselves..?

I'll start the thread as soon as I get some feedback here.

I know the pietasters, from florida, if i am not mistaken. I'm not a big fan of ska myself.

I can see their album, has a family on it, cant think of the name of it though.

Oolooloo <g> ...I don't like much "ska" either, but "Maggie May" is a great drinkin' song, and their rendition of "Same Old Song" ain't too bad...

Here's one for you...anyone heard of an 80s hard rock band called "Shark Island"?

Grandslammer, I also know Roy Buchannon. I had borrowed a tape that contained some of his music. Used to hear him on the radio now and then on some blues/old rock programs.
I remember he has a cover of "green onions" but not much more. To tell you the truth, I never paid much attention to him. Maybe I should hear him again if he is as good as you say.

Tom Waits is great... but he's not so obscure as all that. He was recently in the movie "Mystery Men", and I see him just occasionally as a cameo in other movies. He was also on the Cole Porter memorial/AIDS benefit CD "Red Hot and Blue".

Tom Lehrer has a whole passle of great songs: some favorites are "The Masochistic Tango" and "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park." I've only heard one song by Captain Beefheart but I like it a lot. "your eyes...your eyes...your eyes are they blue million miles..." It's on the "Big Lebowski" soundtrack.

I'm one of those people who has only a few CDs but has listened to each until I can replay every overtone and semiquaver in my mind. How about Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers (a cult favorite)? How about
Arvo Part (modern classical composer)?

B.E., I'd _love_ to trade MP3s but the legal issues will probably prevent us from doing so.

oh.

hmm..

wonder if sharing would be okay..?

or...

sharing just the list of songs?
